Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's globalized world, people can watch movies and TV shows online rather than going to theatres and cinemas. Therefore, critics believe that cinemas are not neccessary for gathering larger audience. Despite the fact that its much easier, convenient and cheaper to watch movies at home, I concur with the notion that cinemas play an immense role in displaying cultures and traditions.

Movie theatres have long been driving force behind the entertainment industry. This is primarily because tickets sale generate revenue for directors, producers, actors and rest of the crew members. In addition to ticket sales through food items such as popcorn and coldrinks also contribute to the theatre revenue. Furthermore, theatres significantly contribute to the economy because each movie ticket has a certain percentage of tax that goes to the government. For instance, in Pakistan upto 20% of movies box office collection goes to the national government. Therefore, all parties including actors, cinemas and theatres are profitable due to this industry.

Opponents opposing the idea say that watching movies online is a much more pragmatic approach because cinemas are too expensive to watch movies every week for film enthusiasts. Furthermore, online platforms are much easier to access with a vast genre of movies and TV shows a person could watch according to their interest. For example, online platforms such as Netflix and Amazon prime have vast range of movies for a bare minimum cost.

In a nutshell, while both view points have their own merits, I firmly believe that cinemas play a paramount role in fostering cultures, in addition to offering audiences a memorable experience, compared to watching online which is often meticulous.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: you acknowledge the convenience and lower cost of online viewing, while arguing that cinemas remain important. The economic case is supported with examples of ticket, food and tax revenue, including the Pakistan example. However, the cultural importance named in your opinion is not explained in the body, and the online-viewing argument focuses mainly on access and affordability rather than fully exploring why this makes cinemas less important. The conclusion also introduces a “memorable experience” without developing it earlier. To strengthen the response, explain how cinemas preserve or showcase culture and traditions, and extend each side with a specific reason or example so the ideas are more evenly developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the economic and online-viewing arguments, and a concluding opinion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “In a nutshell” help readers follow the progression, and the main position is easy to identify. This already provides a coherent arrangement, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “In addition to ticket sales through food items…” does not clearly show how the food sales relate to ticket revenue, while “Therefore, all parties…” makes a broad conclusion from the preceding points. The cultural claim in the introduction is also not carried through the body. Use clearer links between claims and evidence, and organise the discussion so each paragraph develops one central point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “revenue,” “genre,” “box office collection,” and “fostering cultures,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “paramount role.” These choices make the response appropriate to the topic, although some less common phrases are inaccurate or unnatural. “Tickets sale” and “vast range” need more natural forms, while “meticulous” does not convey the intended contrast with online viewing. There are also spelling and form errors, including “neccessary” and “view points.” Aim for precise collocations rather than choosing elevated words that do not fit the meaning. More accurate language for cultural value and the shared cinema experience would also help express your central argument clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Despite the fact that…” and a reason clause beginning “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “its much easier” needs a subject and verb form that agree with the intended meaning (“it is”), and “Movie theatres have long been driving force” is missing an article. In “tickets sale generate revenue,” the noun phrase and verb do not agree, and the sentence beginning “In addition to ticket sales…” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Review articles, agreement, and sentence construction, especially when adding examples or extra information. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control without sacrificing variety.
