IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a ongoing debate on whether cinemas are as important as they were before. Some people argue that in this digitized era, cinemas and theatres are not important anymore as people can watch all the entertainment on their phones or TVs at home, while others reject this claim and say that cinemas and theatres are important economically and culturally.

Well it is true that in this digital age everything is just few clicks away on our mobile phones. There are several apps such as amazon prime who streams almost every movie, tv, show or series combined, available on the planet. Most people just purchase their subscription and entertain themselves at home or office or wherever they are and they do not feel the need to go to cinema to watch movies. Furthermore, almost each and every movie is pirated and available on internet for free without any fees, so many people who have not subscribed to apps such amazon prime, search for pirated version of movies om internet. Watching movies in your phones, TVs or laptops saves a lot of time and money if you compare it to going to cinema. Going to cinema would also require you to travel to the cinema and arrive at designated time, while you can watch movies on your phones anytime and anywhere you want. Although watching movie at home wont get the same experience and fun you get by watching it in cinema.

People who claim that theatres and cinemas are still as important as they were both culturally and economically have also got some strong reasons backing them. In our country whenever you go to watch a movie in cinema, before the movie starts, national anthem of the country is played and everyone stands up and pays respect to the anthem. Which revives the cultural aspect of the cinemas. Cinemas are also important economically as they still generate significant money and government can also benefit by taxing them

In conclusion, both of the views have strong and valid reasons backing them but I am of the view that cinemas and theatres are not as important as they were before because most people prefer entertaining themselves through their own mobile phones or TVs rather than going to a cinema.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: online viewing is more convenient, while cinemas retain cultural and economic value. The examples about streaming subscriptions, piracy, and the national anthem are relevant and help explain your position. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The online-viewing paragraph gives several reasons, whereas the economic case is only briefly asserted (“generate significant money” and “government can also benefit by taxing them”) without explaining how cinemas support jobs, businesses, or local economies. The cultural example is specific, but its significance is not fully explored, and the conclusion largely repeats your view. Develop the less-supported arguments and explain more clearly why they matter to society.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from convenience to the counterargument is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Although,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in connecting ideas. At times, however, the first body paragraph accumulates several similar points about online access without grouping them into a tighter sequence. “Although watching movie at home…” is also left as a fragment rather than being smoothly connected to the preceding contrast. Consider organising each paragraph around one main claim, then supporting it with a focused explanation and example; clearer links between claims would make the progression more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “digitized era,” “subscription,” “pirated,” “cultural aspect,” and “generate significant money.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language is attempted. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “all the entertainment,” “almost each and every movie,” and “revives the cultural aspect.” Repetition of “important,” “movies,” and “cinema” also limits flexibility. There are spelling and form issues, including “om internet” and “digitized,” where “digital” is more natural in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and varied terms—for example, “streaming platforms,” “the theatrical experience,” and “contribute to the local economy”—while keeping the wording accurate and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “as,” and “although,” and most of the meaning remains clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as the comparison between travelling to a cinema and watching at home. There are nevertheless some grammatical errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “There is a ongoing debate” should use “an”; “apps … who streams” has incorrect agreement and a mismatched relative pronoun; and “Although watching movie at home wont get…” is an incomplete clause. Missing apostrophes in “wont” and inconsistent punctuation also affect accuracy. Review articles and subject–verb agreement, and ensure dependent clauses are attached to complete sentences.
