Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the current age of technology, theatres and cinemas are do not carry much value as people can watch everything they want online. Others, however believe that they are still worthy both economically and culturally. This essay will discuss both views and argue why they are still important.

Those who believe that theaters and cinemas are no longer relevant because alternate option are available which are more convenient. Technological advancement has developed alternate options such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and others platforms that lets you access recent and old movies, cartoons, series and other genres anywhere from your smart phone and screens. Anyone can watch it anytime, anywhere and according to their convenience and all this cost a small subscription charges. For example, most film industries such as Hollywood and Bollywood release their movies on these platforms soon after sometime in the cinemas.

However, others are of the opinion that theaters and cinemas still hold a value both financially and culturally. Cinemas are still attracting a large number of audience and they in some occasion fill up all the seats before the movie screening day. For most entertainment companies, theaters are still top earning source. For instance, Spider man recent movie, made the highest earning from cinemas and is still the main featuring movie in most cinemas around the world.

I believe that cinemas and theater still hold importance because most audience believe that watching movies with live audience doubles the fun. The audience energy when a hero kills the villian gives them goosebumps, which cannot be felt watching the movie on your screen outside the cinema.

In conclusion, although some people argue that the time of cinema and theater is over due to the alternate options made possible because of technology. However, they still hold a value as watching movies with live audience brings a life to every scene which is not possible with watching these movies online.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: online platforms offer convenience, while cinemas remain valuable for economic and shared-experience reasons. The examples of streaming services and a recent Spider-Man film make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The online-viewing paragraph mainly lists convenience and access, while the economic case relies on a broad claim that cinemas are a “top earning source” and one film example. Your own opinion is clear, but it focuses almost entirely on audience atmosphere; explaining the cultural value of theatres or cinemas would answer the task more fully. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and specific supporting detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph giving your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the line of argument easy to follow, and transitions such as “However” and “In conclusion” help signal changes in direction. The organisation is generally effective, though some links are mechanical or unclear. The conclusion begins with “although” and then adds “However,” creating an awkward contrast, and the opening of the second body paragraph does not form a complete sentence. There is also some repetition of “theatres and cinemas” and “still hold value.” To strengthen progression, connect each example explicitly to the point it supports and vary references to the central topic.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “technological advancement,” “subscription,” “film industries,” and “audience energy.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and references to streaming platforms and cinema screenings are relevant. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “alternate option,” “top earning source,” and “fill up all the seats before the movie screening day.” There are also spelling and form slips, including “villian” and “Spider man.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use established expressions and check compound words and spelling; for example, describe cinemas as a “major source of revenue” and say that screenings are “sold out in advance.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “options such as Netflix… that lets you access” and a reason clause beginning “because.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. The opening sentence has the conflicting construction “are do not carry,” and “Those who believe… because alternate option are available” is an incomplete sentence with a singular/plural agreement problem. Other examples include “others believe” without a comma after the introductory phrase, “a small subscription charges,” and “cinemas and theater still hold importance.” Work on complete sentence structure, subject–verb agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms. Proofreading these patterns would make your varied sentences more controlled.
