Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some believe, theatres and cinemas are becoming less important since people are moving to digital entertainment through different services applications which allow them watch films, tv series, documentaries or any other videos at home. However, this essay argues that theatres and cinemas still carry a cultural and economical value because many people still want to get that cinematic experience, and because cinema industry is still plays big part in the global economy.

Due to the development of media technology, people can now enjoy movies without stepping out of their homes. Subscription services like Netflix and Disney Plus offer wide varity of films, television series, documentaries, and variety shows to choose from, which you can watch anytime you want. Furthermore, now people are watching videos on social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Tiktok as forms of entertainment. Because of all these new applications and services, people do not need to go to film theatres anymore like before.

Even though that is the case, most people have not abandoned cinemas completely. They still crave the experience of going to cinema, buying some popcorn and enjoying the movie on a large screen with good sound quality. Recent movie releases like Spider Man and The Oddessy showed that cinema industry is still very much alive. Apart from that cultural value, it also carries a significant impact on the global economy as well. In countries like USA and India, cinema industry plays a huge role in national economy, briging foriegn income and providing employment for thousands.

In conclusion, I believe in the significance of theatres and cinemas carry because they are part of the cultural experience of witnessing cinema, and palys an important role in economy providing jobs and earing a lot, despite the arguements of some people saying they are no longer important as people can watch anything at home thanks to modern services and applications.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and make your own position clear: the introduction and conclusion support the continuing cultural and economic importance of cinemas. The paragraph on online entertainment gives relevant examples, including Netflix, Disney Plus and social media, while the next paragraph explains the appeal of the large screen and employment. This covers the task, but the two sides are not developed equally: the case for online viewing is mainly that it is convenient and widely available, with little explanation of how this affects theatres. The economic claim is also broad; explain more specifically how cinemas generate revenue or support related businesses. The examples are relevant, but further explanation would make the argument more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for online entertainment, one for the continuing value of cinemas, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Even though that is the case,” and “Apart from that” help signal the movement between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical, and the final sentence is long and difficult to follow because it combines the opinion, cultural value, economic value and opposing view. The reference in “Apart from that cultural value” is also slightly unclear. Use shorter sentences where several points are being joined, and make the relationship between each claim and its supporting example explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “subscription services,” “cinematic experience,” “sound quality,” “global economy” and “employment.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and there are attempts at more specific language. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “services applications,” “wide varity,” “plays big part,” and “bringing foreign income.” Spelling errors, including “Oddessy,” “briging,” “foriegn,” “palys” and “arguements,” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations such as “streaming platforms,” “a major role,” and “generate foreign revenue,” and proofread carefully for spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “since people are moving to digital entertainment” and a contrast structure beginning “Even though…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “allow them watch” needs “allow them to watch,” and “cinema industry is still plays” incorrectly combines two verb forms. In “most people have not abandoned cinemas completely,” the structure is controlled, but the conclusion’s opening, “I believe in the significance … carry,” is not grammatically complete. The final sentence also joins several clauses without clear control. Review verb patterns, articles and sentence boundaries, especially when expressing several linked reasons.
