Student answer (Band 6.0)
There are contrasting views regarding theatres and cinemas in the digital age. Some people argue that they can watch all the entertainment on online platforms, so there is no longer a need for cinemas now. On the other hand, some believe that theatres and cinemas are still beneficial for our society in terms of economy and culture. This essay will examine both views before presenting my own opinion.
In recent years, social media has overtaken the other sources of entertainment. The invention of applications like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc grabbed the attention of people, as they can watch their favorite movies and shows there. For instance, one of my friends was a big fan of watching movies in cinema, however after the popularity of Netflix, he purchased the subscription, he now can access any kind of shows or serials virtually.
Nevertheless, cinemas and theatres have always been a great part of entertainment in our society. It contributes to our economy in many different forms. It provides a lot of jobs to many people such as ticket counter, cleaner, etc, which show us the financial importance of theatres. The experience of watching a movie in cinema is absolutely peak, as it would not be the same fun getting that lightning environment in our home. To illustrate, I went to cinema last month and it was wonderful experience, at that moment I realized that witnessing something on big screen in dark room has its own separate vibe, which cannot be achieved in our home environment.
In conclusion, while I acknowledge that the importance of cinemas is no longer the same as before due to online sources of entertainment, I believe cinemas are still superior source of entertainment that also contributes meaningfully to our economy and culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both perspectives and make your own position clear: online platforms offer convenient access, while cinemas retain social, economic and cultural value. The examples about your friend’s Netflix subscription and your own cinema visit make the discussion relevant. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The online-entertainment paragraph mainly describes the popularity of streaming and gives one personal example, without explaining in depth why this makes theatres less important. The economic point is also narrow, focusing on jobs such as ticket sellers and cleaners, while the cultural value named in the introduction and conclusion is not really explained. Develop these ideas with clearer reasons and examples, and connect them more directly to the task’s economic and cultural claims.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the discussion, and the examples are placed with the relevant arguments. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger progression. To make the organisation more flexible and precise, avoid relying mainly on explicit transition phrases and strengthen the links between claims and explanations. For example, the move from streaming services to your friend’s experience is clear, but the paragraph could explain how this convenience affects cinemas more broadly. The conclusion also introduces culture without that idea having been developed in the body.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital age,” “online platforms,” “subscription,” “financial importance,” and “big screen.” These choices make the main ideas easy to understand, and you attempt some more expressive language, such as “separate vibe.” However, several word choices and collocations are imprecise or informal for an academic essay. “Social media” does not accurately describe streaming services such as Netflix, and “lightning environment” appears to be an unsuitable phrase for the cinema experience. “Peak” and “vibe” are also conversational. Aim for more precise, consistently academic wording, and check collocations so that your vocabulary conveys the intended meaning naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses and examples introduced with “as” and “which.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “It contributes” and “It provides” refer back to the plural “cinemas and theatres,” so the verbs should agree with that subject. In “after the popularity of Netflix, he purchased the subscription, he now can access,” two independent clauses are joined with a comma; use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction. Articles are also missing in phrases such as “it was wonderful experience” and “in dark room.” Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
