Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, there are different opinions concerning theatres and cinemas. While some believe that there are no longer essential as people can view any kind of entertainment they wish to watch online. Others argue that there is still need for theatres and cinemas as they are economincal and maintain culture. This essay will discuss both perspectives before giving my opinion why i believe theatres and cinemas are still necessary.
On the one hand, many people believe theatres and cinemas are no longer important as they can watch any entertainment online. This is because of unavailability, that is people now work more in this digital age to provide for their family. As a result, they do not have time to visit the cinema or go watch a theatre show. This leads them into watching videos online by means of phone, television or laptop. For example, a white collar job man who works 9am to 5pm will chose to rest at home after work in preparation for work the next day, then to go to a cinema or theatre.
On the other hand, others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. The main reason is that it serve as source of income for some people. This means that, maintaining cinemas and theatres gives people employment so as to be able to feed their family. Also, they want to preserve their culture. For instance, a theatre that often organise a show of different culture which brings people of different ethnicities togetther. As a result, such show will still be importent for some people as it makes them associate with different people from various ethnics.
In my opinion, this viewpoint is more convincing because it brings people from different part of the country together, and one can build connection from this act. Also, it gives the unemployed the priviledge to be able to fend for their family.
In conclusion, although both viewpoints have their own merits. However, i believe that theatres and cinemas are still important because it provides greater long-term benefits for individuals and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both sides of the discussion and make your position clear: you support the continuing importance of theatres and cinemas. The economic point is relevant, as you explain that these venues provide employment, and the cultural point is illustrated through performances bringing different ethnic groups together. The opposing view is also explained with the example of a worker choosing to rest at home and watch online. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. In particular, the claim that people are too busy is presented mainly through one example, and the economic and cultural benefits could be explained in more depth. Develop each reason with a clearer explanation of its wider effects.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. This makes the discussion easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help distinguish the arguments. The progression is generally logical, though some linking is mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is because of unavailability” does not clearly connect to the following point about people working more, and “As a result” is used where the relationship between ideas could be stated more precisely. The opinion paragraph also repeats benefits already mentioned. To strengthen cohesion, make links between claims and explanations more explicit and avoid repeating the same point in the conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “digital age,” “source of income,” “preserve their culture,” and “different ethnicities.” These phrases allow you to communicate the main ideas, but the range and precision are uneven, and some word choices or collocations sound unnatural. For example, “there is still need” and “a white collar job man” do not express the intended meaning naturally; “there is still a need” and “an office worker” would be clearer. There are also spelling errors such as “economincal,” “togetther,” “importent,” and “priviledge.” Aim to use accurate topic-specific expressions and check spelling carefully, especially in key claims.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “While,” “because,” and “although,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, some grammatical errors remain. For example, “some believe that there are no longer essential” is missing a subject complement (“they are no longer essential”), while “it serve as source of income” needs agreement and an article (“it serves as a source of income”). The conclusion also combines “although” and “however” in a way that creates a faulty sentence structure. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and punctuation spacing needs attention. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and how to punctuate contrast clauses, while continuing to practise varied sentence forms.
