Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that theatre and cinema have become less significant in the presence of digital media, as anything can be watched online. Others think that both mediums are still vital because of their cultural and economic contributions. In my opinion, I believe that theatre and cinema play vital role in connecting individuals of different cultures together and also going to cinema and theatres can significantly contribute to the economy.

On the one hand, digital media has a huge impact on cultural diversity, as it has made it easy to consume any sort of entertainment and also helped in getting acquainted with different cultures at home without stepping outside. A wide range of entertainment content is easily available to the wider population, which is why it is believed that cinemas and theaters are not significant. For instance, Netflix is an online platform, where, from all over the world a thousand number movies are available. People from different races, languages and cultures watch those movies, learn those languages and also, get to know a variety of cultures.

On the other hand, going to cinema or theatres does contribute in making economical climate better. That is to say, the more people will come outside of their residents, use public transport to reach cinemas and buy movie tickets, could help in the elevation of economy. A latest example of this is the release of movie Odyssey, it was realesed in the cinemas having IMAX screen which are only few in numbers, globally. People from all over the globe travelled to the citiies containing IMAX screened cinemas, which contributed heavily in the economy, as people stayed in hotels, used local transportations to reach the destination and bought expensive movie tickets.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear preference for the continuing importance of theatres and cinemas. The discussion of online entertainment is relevant, and the Netflix example illustrates how audiences can access films from different cultures at home. Your economic argument is also supported with a specific example involving IMAX screenings, travel, hotels and ticket purchases. However, the cultural case for physical venues is not fully explained: the introduction says they connect people across cultures, but the body mainly describes online viewing rather than how shared attendance creates that connection. The economic example is detailed, but its broad claim about effects on the economy could be qualified or explained more precisely. Develop both sides more evenly and make the link between each example and your position explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting the online-media view, and a paragraph supporting the continued value of venues. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the contrast, and examples are placed with the relevant arguments. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical, however. The first body paragraph begins with digital media’s effect on “cultural diversity,” then moves to why cinemas are considered insignificant; the relationship between these points could be made more explicit. The final paragraph also packs several economic effects into one long sentence, making the progression harder to follow. Use clearer links between claims and evidence, and conclude with a brief summary of your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital media,” “cultural diversity,” “contributions,” “public transport” and “IMAX screen.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt more specific language when discussing the economic effects of cinema attendance. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “economical climate better,” “elevation of economy,” and “a thousand number movies.” There are also spelling errors in “realesed” and “citiies,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe venues as contributing to the local economy and say that a platform offers thousands of films. This would make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “as,” “which is why” and “That is to say.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In the introduction, “play vital role” needs an article, and “I believe” repeats the meaning of “In my opinion.” In the economic paragraph, “the more people will come outside of their residents … could help” has an unclear and faulty conditional structure; a clearer version would be “When people leave their homes, use transport and buy tickets, this can support the local economy.” There are also agreement and article issues in “IMAX screen which are only few in numbers.” Practise accurate conditional sentences, articles and agreement while retaining your range of structures.
