IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that in the modern age, the existence of entertainment places like cinema and theatre is no longer necessary due to the availability of online entertainment, while others argue that theatres and cinemas still hold a significant importance for cultural and economical reasons. I personally agree with the second view.

In the current world scenario a person can search for any movie online and can watch it free of cost on various online platforms. This not only saves their money spent on tickets, but also gives them the freedom to watch the movie at their own pace. In the current world scenario, many people do not have enough time to watch a movie continously for three hours, so they can watch it in parts by allocating some hours of their free time everyday to finish the movie. Furthermore, in many modern houses there is a special theatre room where they can watch their favourite movie or other tv shows without spending a single penny.

Supporters of the other view often argues that the complete closures of such places would damage the economy of the country, and the revenue generated through these places can be used to fund other basic requirements of the country like healthcare and public transport. Furthermore, on the arrival of their favourite festivals some people also visit these places along with their family or with their loved ones, so these places hold a significant place in their memory. Also, due to the differences in financial backgrounds, not everyone is capable of affording a home theatre and they generally rely upon these places.

In conclusion, even though it is generally more flexible to watch entertainment content from almost any part of the world, the need of entertainment places like cinema and theatre is still there, as most of the people are reliable on these places as their major entertainment sources.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: “I personally agree with the second view.” The online-entertainment paragraph gives relevant reasons, including lower cost and the flexibility to watch in parts, while the opposing view includes economic and social benefits. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for cinemas and theatres relies on broad claims about national revenue and festival visits, with little explanation or a specific example. The cultural importance of live performance and shared viewing could also be explored more directly. Your conclusion restates your preference, but the claim that most people rely on these venues is not established by the preceding points. Develop and support the central reasons more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from online convenience to the economic and social value of venues is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” help signal relationships. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, “In the current world scenario” is repeated, and several sentences begin with “Furthermore” or “Also,” making the links somewhat mechanical. The final paragraph introduces the claim that most people rely on venues without clearly connecting it to the earlier evidence. Use more varied transitions and clearer references between claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “online platforms,” “revenue,” “financial backgrounds,” and “home theatre,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “significant importance” and “basic requirements.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “current world scenario,” “complete closures,” and “reliable on these places.” “Economical reasons” is also less suitable than the intended meaning of economic benefits. Spelling errors such as “continously” and “everyday” (where “every day” is intended) reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “so,” and “even though.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the longer sentences generally express relationships between ideas successfully. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “Supporters of the other view often argues” has a subject–verb agreement error; it should be “argue.” In “a person can search … and can watch,” the repeated modal is unnecessary, while “on the arrival of their favourite festivals” has an awkward grammatical construction. The opening sentence is also long and would be clearer if divided or simplified. Review agreement and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures.
