Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the digital age some people believe that theatres and cinemas are no longer important because people can watch movies and other entertainment online. However, others think that cinemas are still important for economic and cultural reasons. This essay will discuss both views, and I believe that cinemas continued to play an important role in society.

On the one hand, watching entertainment online is more convenient and affordable for many people. Firstly, cinema tickets will be too expensive, especially when people need to pay for transport and snacks. In comparison, the online platforms allow users to watch movies at home in lower prices. Secondly, many employees have busy schedules and only get one day off, usually on Sundays. Therefore, they may not have enough time to watch cinemas at theatre. Watching movies online allows them to spend time with their family without travelling to the movie theatres.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas remain important for cultural and economic reasons. In some countries, watching movies at the theatres with the friends or family has become a tradition, especially during festivals. This experiences creates happiness and memorable experience watching movie and that may not be same in watching online. Furthermore, cinemas provides opportunities for new actors, directors and filmmakers to show their talent. When people watch there films, they may get popular and built successful careers. This also generate more revenue and creates new employment in film industry.

In conclusion, although online entertainment is cheaper and more convenient for people with busy schedule. I believe that cinemas are still important because they support cultural traditions and encourages new talent. Therefore, both form have their own value in the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear opinion: cinemas remain important despite the convenience of online entertainment. The affordability and scheduling points explain why some people prefer streaming, while the tradition and employment points support your view. These are relevant reasons, and the examples about festivals and film-industry jobs help make the argument concrete. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. For instance, the claim that cinemas create “more revenue” is asserted without explaining how this benefits the wider economy, and the cultural experience could be illustrated more specifically. To strengthen the response, extend each main point with a clear explanation or a relevant example, while maintaining your position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs presenting each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. The points within each body paragraph are generally grouped appropriately, and “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader. Some linking is mechanical, however, and a few references are unclear. For example, “This experiences” does not clearly connect to the preceding idea, and “This also generate” leaves the referent of “This” somewhat vague. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing the relationship between ideas, rather than relying mainly on standard sequencing phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for discussing convenience, culture, and employment, with relevant terms such as “affordable,” “tradition,” “filmmakers,” and “revenue.” The meaning is generally clear, but noticeable word-choice, collocation, and word-form errors limit precision. Examples include “watch cinemas at theatre,” “in lower prices,” and “built successful careers”; these expressions are understandable but not natural in context. There is also repetition of “important,” “watch,” and “movies,” so the range can feel limited. Aim to learn common topic collocations and use them accurately, such as “watch a film in a cinema” and “at a lower cost.” More precise vocabulary would make your arguments sound more fluent and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “especially when,” and “although.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the overall argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence completeness. For example, “This experiences creates” has a mismatch between subject and verb, while “cinemas provides” and “This also generate” also require agreement. The conclusion begins “although online entertainment is cheaper and more convenient” but does not complete that dependent clause as a full sentence. Review subject–verb agreement and check that each sentence has a complete main clause. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside your existing sentence variety, would improve control.
