Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some would argue that in the current era, theatres and cinemas are no longer important because people can watch all the entertainment from the internet platforms. While others say that theatres and cinemas are still crucial from economic and cultural point of view. I believe that threatres and cinemas are still significant to any countrys' economy, that's why people should visit theatres and cinemas more than watching content form online platforms.

One the one hand, proponents of online platforms say that threatres and cinemas are not significant, as everyone can watch all kind of movies and shows online from OTT platforms. They think that visiting a theatre or a cinema is a waste of money because they can watch much more content at the comfort of their home by getting any OTT platform subscription. These subscriptions generally cost one-third of the money that people spend on purchasing a movie ticket from the theatre or cinema. Also these subscitpions are paid on monthly basis that is why people love to purchase subscriptions instead of purchasing theatre tickets. For instance, 70 percent of Indian population has stopped visiting theatres and shifted to Netflix and other platforms like Amazon prime.

On the other hand, production companies and governments can get more economic benefits by playing their content first in threatres and cinemas. In several countries companies' first priority is to sell their movies and plays to theatres and cinema houses as they get money by selling their content and theatres and cinemas earn through selling tickets. Consequently, it also help the governments to get financial benefits in the form of taxes. In the past countries with more production houses were earning more from selling their movies and shows to theatres and cinemas than selling their content to OTT platforms. For example, production houses in India were making more profits on Bollywood movies in the past than in the current period.

In conclusion, Although people can watch their favourite shows and movies through OTT platforms at less price, but cinemas and theatres have more economic value for the production houses and the governements.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both perspectives and state your view: online subscriptions are cheaper, while cinemas and theatres bring economic benefits. The two body paragraphs are relevant, and the examples about subscriptions and Indian film production help illustrate your points. However, the cultural importance named in the prompt is not really discussed, so one part of the opposing view is left unaddressed. Your own position is also framed mainly as an economic claim, and the conclusion does not explain why this outweighs the convenience of online viewing. Some claims, such as 70 percent of Indians having stopped visiting cinemas, are presented without support. Develop the cultural argument and explain your reasoning more fully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The contrast between “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” makes the discussion easy to follow, and ideas within each paragraph generally stay on topic. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through clear paragraphing. However, links can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Also” and “Consequently,” and the conclusion begins with “Although” but does not complete a grammatically balanced contrast. Some references are also broad, such as “they” in the discussion of companies and governments. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between claims and examples more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “OTT platforms,” “subscriptions,” “production companies,” “financial benefits,” and “taxes.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “proponents” and “economic point of view.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “important,” “significant,” “content,” and “theatres and cinemas.” Several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors are noticeable, including “all the entertainment from the internet platforms,” “at the comfort of their home,” “subscitpions,” and “governements.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; vary repeated terms with accurate alternatives such as “venues” or “screenings.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “as,” and “that is why,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, complex structures are often not controlled accurately, and errors recur in agreement, articles, possessives, and sentence construction. For example, “it also help the governments” needs subject–verb agreement, while “from economic and cultural point of view” needs an article. The opening sentence of the conclusion, “Although people can watch …, but cinemas …,” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly. There are also errors in “One the one hand” and “countrys’ economy.” Practise building accurate contrast and cause-and-effect sentences, then proofread for agreement, articles, and punctuation.
