Student answer (Band 6.0)

While several people hold that in the digital era, theatres and cinemas are obsolete, as people can watch all the entertainment they want digitally online, some argue that theatres and cinemas are still crucial for the economy and culture. In my opinion, theatres and cinemas are fundamental for one's country growth in multifaced ways, and I support the second sentiment. This essay will describe both views and give the writer's opinion on those views.

On the one hand, some individuals say theatres and cinemas are outdated because they are inconvenient to use whenever they want. Typically, most people could be exhausted after an arduous job and tasks. Therefore, they tend to watch movies online on some platforms, such as YouTube. For example, most of the time after heavy and deep study, I watch some movies to relax instead of going out and searching for cinemas. However, because we do not use it mean it is trivial. It is useful for every country to show its history.

On the other hand, other people argue that cinemas and theatres are essential because it helps a country to show its history and even help a country's economy through tourism and other ways. It is also helpful to illustrate a culture simply. For instance, in my country, Ethiopia, there is an old cinema called "Tkur Anbesa", which tells people and tourists how and when Ethiopian history started. It also tells people how Ethiopians lived in that era, which resulted in a good income for our country's economy.

In conclusion, although many people believe theatres and cinemas are useless in the digital age, others oppose this by saying they are important both economically and culturally. I believe they play a significant role in the country's history, economy, and culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a consistent preference for the cultural and economic importance of theatres and cinemas. The Ethiopia example gives your position some relevant support, particularly the reference to a historic cinema and its appeal to tourists. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the case for online entertainment mainly concerns convenience after work or study, while the claim that cinemas show a country’s history is asserted rather than explained. The economic benefit is also mentioned without showing how it arises beyond tourism. To strengthen the response, explain the opposing view more fully and connect each example to the task’s economic or cultural claims with clearer reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. However, some links between ideas are abrupt or unclear. For example, “However, because we do not use it mean it is trivial” does not clearly connect the personal example to the claim about national history. The introduction also announces that the essay will describe both views, which adds little to the progression. Use clearer references and transitions to show how each example supports the point, and make the paragraph development less dependent on formulaic signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “obsolete,” “essential,” “tourism,” and “culture,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “arduous job,” though some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Multifaced ways” is not the appropriate expression here, and “good income for our country’s economy” is an awkward collocation. Repetition of “people,” “country,” and “helpful” also limits flexibility. Aim for precise, natural combinations and vary repeated terms; for example, describe a venue as contributing to local revenue or preserving cultural heritage. These improvements would make your vocabulary more controlled without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession clause beginning “although” and a reason introduced by “because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “because we do not use it mean it is trivial,” the clause structure is incomplete; a form such as “the fact that people use it less does not mean it is trivial” would be clearer. In “cinemas and theatres are essential because it helps,” the pronoun does not agree with the plural subject, and “could be exhausted” is less suitable for a general present-tense claim than “may feel exhausted.” Review agreement, clause construction, and tense choices, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
