Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that in this modern era, theatres and cinemas are no longer significant because people enjoy all the entertainment online at home. However, others think that these are vital for economic and cultural growth. It is true that online entertainment is readily accessible, I believe theatres and cinemas still play an indispensable role.

It is undeniable that online platforms provide a vast array of entertainment. Moreover, in this digital age, viewers prefer to stream their favorite content at their convenience without leaving their homes. To illustrate, Netflix and You tube are widely used by viewers for entertainment purposes, also they are more convenient and more cost-effective than visiting cinemas. The other factor is that cinemas are often expensive rather than the free online content; additionally, premium subscription of online apps are also quite cheap.

Conversely, importance of the theatres and cinemas is not dispensable due to the digital age. By providing a significant source of entertainment for locals and tourists, they support the national economy. Additionally, these venues showcase the national culture globally. The other major reason is that their big screens and high quality visuals provide a remarkable entertainment experience for families on weekends. Furthermore, they also provide better facilities of clear subtitles, sound, sitting and refreshment which are absent at home.

In conclusion, although online platforms provide easy access and convenience for entertainment without leaving comfort zone, cinemas and theatres are still crucial both economically and culturally. Also they are costly but they provide substantial visual and audible facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: online entertainment is convenient, but theatres and cinemas remain important. The discussion includes relevant reasons, such as affordability and access to streaming, alongside venues’ economic contribution and cultural role. This covers the task well, and the claim that venues showcase national culture gives your position some development beyond simply listing advantages. However, several points are asserted rather than explained. For example, you say they support the economy and showcase culture globally, but do not explain how or give a specific example. The comparison of the at-home experience with venue facilities could also be developed. To strengthen the response further, extend these ideas with a concrete example and explain why the cultural and economic benefits matter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. The contrast between the views is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Conversely,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. “The other factor” and “The other major reason” repeat a similar pattern, while “also” links ideas in the first body paragraph without clearly showing their relationship. The sentence beginning “It is true that online entertainment is readily accessible” joins two independent ideas with only a comma. Use a wider range of transitions that express specific relationships, and make links between claims and explanations more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “readily accessible,” “cost-effective,” “national economy,” and “remarkable entertainment experience.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and attempts at more formal language are evident. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however, such as “importance … is not dispensable,” “premium subscription … are also quite cheap,” and “clear subtitles, sound, sitting and refreshment.” “You tube” also needs the standard spelling and capitalisation “YouTube.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use familiar collocations accurately—for example, “remain relevant,” “subscription services,” and “comfortable seating”—rather than choosing a more formal-sounding phrase that does not fit the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “without leaving their homes” and a contrastive opening with “although” in the conclusion. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. In “It is true that online entertainment is readily accessible, I believe…,” a comma joins two complete clauses; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “premium subscription of online apps are,” the singular subject does not agree with “are.” The phrase “without leaving comfort zone” also needs a determiner, such as “their comfort zones.” Review clause boundaries, subject–verb agreement, and articles, while continuing to practise complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
