Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, some individuals argue that theatres and cinemas are not essential for people, because all entertainment shows and programs can be viewed online and easy to access. But a another set of people continuing to support theatres and cinemas. i believe that although online entertainment is convenient, theatre and cinema remain important to society.

On the one hand, the development of digital technology has transformed the way people view the entertainments. Streaming platforms allow individuals can watch their favourite programs from the comfort of their home. People can download and see their choices of shows and movies at their convenient time and can also forward and backward the shows if they missed a part in between, that option is not totally available in a traditional movie option. Moreover, online entertainments are more affordable rather than visiting a cinema, particularly for families. Hence, online platforms are more convenient and comfortable in the digital world.

On the other hand, theatres and cinemas are crucial in terms of economic and culture. From an economic perspective, many people get employment opportunities, for instance actors, directors, back-end technicians and other staff members. Besides restaurants and other shops located nearby, will also benefitted. From cultural perspective, theatres can portray traditional art forms, while cinemas bring people together to view the performance in big screen. Watching a movie in a big screen with other people creates fantastic experience that is difficult to reproduce at home. on top of that, theaters often showcase local culture and tradition, helping younger generation understand their cultural heritage.

In my opinion, online entertainment should complement traditional cinemas rather than replacing them totally. Although, online platforms offer flexibility and convenience, they cannot fully recreate the shared experience of watching the performances

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear position: online entertainment is convenient, but cinemas and theatres should complement rather than be replaced by it. The discussion includes relevant reasons, such as affordability and flexibility on one side, and employment, local businesses, cultural heritage, and the shared viewing experience on the other. This covers the task well, and the economic and cultural points show some development. However, several claims remain broad: for example, the employment point would be stronger with a specific illustration, and the cultural value of theatre could be explained more fully. Your conclusion also ends before completing the final thought, which leaves your opinion less fully rounded than the discussion suggests. More precise examples and a complete conclusion would strengthen the response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a final paragraph giving your opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” helps readers follow the argument. Within paragraphs, ideas generally progress logically, moving from convenience to affordability and then from economic to cultural value. However, some connections are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Moreover,” “Hence,” and “On top of that.” The final paragraph is incomplete, so the ending does not provide a fully clear sense of closure. A few sentences also contain several linked points, making relationships between them less easy to follow. Use a wider range of linking methods and finish with a concise concluding sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “streaming platforms,” “employment opportunities,” “back-end technicians,” “cultural heritage,” and “shared experience.” These choices help you discuss both the practical and cultural dimensions of the topic. You also attempt more specific expressions, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “view the entertainments,” “at their convenient time,” and “benefitted” in the context of nearby businesses. “Big screen” is understandable, though “large screen” or “cinema screen” would sound more natural. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but more precise collocations and consistent word forms would improve fluency. Continue building topic-specific vocabulary and check whether phrases sound natural in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “although online entertainment is convenient” and a relative clause in “which is difficult to reproduce at home.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “allow individuals can watch” incorrectly combines two verb patterns; write “allow individuals to watch.” There are also article and agreement problems in “a another set of people” and “theatres and cinemas are crucial in terms of economic and culture.” The sentence beginning “Besides restaurants and other shops…” has an unnecessary comma and an incorrect verb form (“will also benefitted”). Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, and the final sentence is unfinished. Review verb patterns, articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
