IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether people in future will watch movies in theatres or they will watch movie online. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I support the latter view.

On the one hand, there are several online platforms which provides access to watch different movies and web series at home with a fixed amount. However, people love to watch movies in cinemas but there are lot of people who do not have access to cinemas or theatres so in this situation watching movies using these platforms are much convenient than cinemas. Such as, there are lot of people who do not have cinemas or theatres in their cities and watching movies on these types of platforms plays an significant role in people's entertainment.

On the other hand, as most of the movies are been lanuched in these types of platform which indicates that in future public might lean towards watching movies at home without going in any cinemas or theathres. Whereas if we compare the price then it shows that watching movies online are more cheaper than watching it in cinemas. Therefore, currently people love to watch movies in cinemas but in future there are possibilities that public might like to watch movies at home. For example, people are spending there most of the time in working so watching movies at home might be more convenient rather than going to cinemas.

In conclusion, I strongly lean towards the second statement beacause the future is unpredictable and people might loves to spend their time watching movies at home rather than going in cinemas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You state a position in the introduction and conclusion, and you give relevant reasons for preferring online viewing, including convenience, access in places without cinemas, and cost. However, the task asks you to discuss the cultural and economic importance of theatres and cinemas as well as the case for online entertainment. The response gives little meaningful support for that opposing view: “people love to watch movies in cinemas” is asserted but not explained, and the cultural and economic dimensions are largely absent. Your opinion also shifts from “the latter view” to a prediction that people may watch at home, rather than clearly weighing both arguments. Develop both sides with specific explanations and examples, then state a consistent, direct position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help identify the sections. However, the progression between ideas is not always clear. The first body paragraph mainly supports online viewing, while the second also focuses on online viewing, so the promised discussion of both perspectives is not reflected in the organisation. “Whereas” introduces a comparison without a complete contrast, and repeated references to future viewing make the argument feel circular. Give each body paragraph a distinct purpose—one for the continuing value of cinemas and one for online convenience—and use linking phrases to show how each reason develops.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “online platforms,” “web series,” “convenient” and “unpredictable.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise, particularly repeated uses of “watch movies,” “people” and “in future.” There are also noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems, such as “fixed amount,” “lean towards,” “lanuched,” “theathres” and “beacause.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main point, but they reduce clarity and naturalness. Aim for more precise expressions such as “subscription fee,” “prefer,” and “released,” and vary vocabulary when discussing cinema attendance, streaming and cultural value.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which” and “so,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward. For example, “platforms which provides” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “watching movies online are more cheaper” has agreement and comparative-form problems. In “people might loves,” the verb form after “might” is incorrect; “people are been lanuched” also shows an inaccurate passive construction. Review agreement, modal verb patterns, articles and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for one clear subject and correctly formed verb.
