Student answer (Band 6.5)

Movies and drama serials have always remained a great source of entertainment for public. A few years ago, movies were featured only in cinemas and theatres but in recent years, technological advancements have also revolutionized the way people access different sources of entertainment. Some people argue that in this digital era, people have lost the craze for theatres and cinemas while others believe that they are still equally important. I believe that despite the modern sources of entertainment, theatres and cinemas still hold a vital role in entertainment industry.

On the one hand, people believe that cinemas are no longer important. In this digital era, everyone can use their personal device to watch movies. Moreover due to hectic schedule, it is very difficult to spare out time to go and watch movies in a theatre when you can enjoy them at home. Secondly, different online apps provide access to all the latest movies at a fraction of cost as compared to theatres. For example, By using the apps like netflix and amazon prime, users can enjoy hundreds of movies at a very cheap price with a very flexible schedule.

On the other hand, others contend that theatres and cinemas are still equally important. They are the one of the biggest sources of revenue for the film-makers. Secondly, many people prefer enjoying the movies on big screen between other people. Moreover, theatres are a great source of entertainment for people to come and spend weekend enjoying movies with their families. For example, most of the people spend their weeks in a very hectic environment and like to spend their weekends enjoying movies with their families in theatres.

Therefore, in my opinion, although digital devices have made entertainment accessible but still theatres and cinemas are equally important sources of enjoyment and are also vital economically and culturally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a consistent opinion: cinemas are less convenient than online services, but remain important for entertainment and for the industry. The examples about streaming apps and family visits are relevant and help explain each side. However, the economic and cultural importance is asserted more than explored. For instance, calling cinemas “one of the biggest sources of revenue” is not supported with an explanation of how they benefit filmmakers or related businesses, while the cultural dimension is only implied through shared viewing. Some points also overlap, such as the two references to busy schedules and weekend family outings. Develop these ideas with more specific reasoning or an example, and make the cultural case explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The contrastive signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the discussion easy to follow, and the conclusion returns to your position. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some stronger progression. However, links between individual points can feel mechanical: “Secondly” is used to add points without always showing how they relate, and “Moreover” introduces another reason in a similar way. The final paragraph also repeats ideas from the body rather than drawing them together. Use a wider range of logical links and clearer references to connect reasons, consequences, and examples.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “technological advancements,” “access,” “revenue,” and “flexible schedule.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and the response includes some attempts at more formal vocabulary. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or repetitive: “craze for theatres” is not a natural way to describe declining attendance, and “spare out time” is awkward. “Equally important” is repeated, while “movies” and “entertainment” recur frequently. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and natural collocations, such as describing cinemas as “venues” or discussing their “box-office income” and “shared cultural experience.” Check capitalization of brand names such as Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses with “although” and time clauses such as “when you can enjoy them at home.” Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely obscure your meaning. Some grammatical slips persist, including the article and agreement in “They are the one of the biggest sources,” which should be “They are one of the biggest sources,” and the missing comma after the introductory phrase “Moreover, due to hectic schedule.” The final sentence also needs a clearer structure: “although digital devices have made entertainment accessible, theatres and cinemas remain…” would avoid the awkward “but still” construction. Continue practising articles, sentence punctuation, and balanced clause structures while retaining your range of complex sentences.
