Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the digital age, many people believe that traditional cinemas and theatres have become less importantbecause entertainment in readily available online. However, others argue that theatres and cinemas play a significant role in both the economy and cultural life. In my opinion online entertainment is more convenient. You can have online entertainment anywhere, everytime you want.

Nowadays, the trend has been changed and more people prefer entertainment online rather than going to the theatres and cinemas because it is more convenient and free of cost. We can see the movie online after a few days of launching. In this digital era we've got different websites where we can see the same movie. Websites such as Netflix. Prime video, Youtube, Amazon are the examples where we can see variety of movies, films etc. We can easily access to these websites online and can watch a movie without any chaos anywhere we want.

On the other hand some people still argue that theatres and cinema play a vital role both economically and culturally. From my perspective, it has become a tradition that whenever a new movie or film releases people are excited to go out with families and prefer watching together. It makes them share the moments and thoughts about the certain movie together. Secondly, when people come in group to watch a movie they are charged a certain amount to watch it and that amount could be used to support families who are not financially stable or that amount could be donated for the betterment of the country. Thirdly, when the theatres and cinemas are packed with people it specifically shows their interest and support towards that particular movie or film and it encourages actors working in our drama and movie industries to make more movies like these to entertain people.

At the end, i would just like to mention that if i consider my own personal opinion then i would go for online entertainment as it is more efficient and free of cost but if we consider it economically and culturally then it is useful too.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a clear preference for online entertainment, while also recognising the economic and cultural value of cinemas and theatres. The online case is supported with convenience, cost, and access to streaming platforms. Your discussion of the opposing view includes shared family experiences and support for the film industry. However, some reasoning is unclear or insufficiently developed: for example, the claim that ticket revenue could support financially unstable families or be donated to the country is not explained, and the economic contribution of venues is not directly explored. The conclusion repeats your preference but does not fully weigh the two sides. Develop the economic and cultural arguments with more precise examples and explain how they shape your overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph favouring online viewing, a paragraph presenting the continuing value of venues, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “At the end” help signal movement between sections. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, particularly the sequence “Secondly” and “Thirdly,” and some links between claims are not clear. The point about ticket charges supporting families, for instance, does not follow logically without further explanation. The conclusion also introduces a contrast between personal preference and economic or cultural usefulness without clearly resolving it. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each supporting example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to discuss the issue, including “digital age,” “cultural life,” “tradition,” and “film industries.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “financially stable” and “betterment of the country.” However, word choice and collocation are often imprecise or repetitive: “entertainment online,” “movie or film,” and “watch a movie” recur, while “free of cost” and “access to these websites online” are not natural formulations. Some wording, such as “the trend has been changed,” also makes the intended meaning less fluent. Build a wider set of natural phrases for convenience, affordability, shared experiences, and economic impact, and check collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some longer structures, including clauses with “because,” “whenever,” and “when,” so there is a basic mix of sentence forms. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “entertainment in readily available online” is missing a verb, and “people prefer entertainment online rather than going” has an awkward comparison structure. There are also issues with articles and agreement in “theatres and cinema play,” and the final sentence shifts into an unclear conditional construction: “if i consider … then i would go.” Review verb forms, singular and plural agreement, and sentence boundaries; practise combining ideas accurately rather than relying on long, loosely connected sentences.
