Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is a contentious argument about whether in today's digitalised world, theatres and cinemas are essential or not. Some people argue the its not important because of online accessibility of entertainment others opine its importance culturally and economically. This essay will articulate both rationales before providing my own view.

Some people believe that cinemas are no longer as important as before because of the advent of online media. To be precise, people can even download and watch a wide variety of movies in the comfort of their home without paying extra money, which has decreased the crowd in cinema halls. For instance, nowadays, most of the seats in cinemas are vacant. Moreover, people have made their own home theatre at home, where all the family members can watch films together. Hence, with the introduction of the digital age, the need to visit theatres has declined.

However, theatres hold considerable economic and cultural value. Firstly, in cinema halls, all people can sit together and enjoy the movie, which promotes harmony and social and cultural value. Secondly, purchasing a ticket of watching movie at cinema contribute economically. For example, there are various news regarding the financial contribution of first show of movie, which clearly depicts that it still holds significant importance today because many people want to watch first day first show of the movie.

In conclusion, although technology has provided a convenient and efficient mode of watching movies, I still believe that the importance of watching movies has not eroded and continues to contribute financially and culturally to society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position: the first body paragraph explains the convenience of online viewing, while the second presents social, cultural and economic reasons to retain cinemas. Your conclusion also makes your opinion clear. These points are relevant, but some are less fully developed than others. The claim that “most of the seats in cinemas are vacant” is broad and unsupported, and the economic example about news of a film’s first show is vague rather than showing how cinemas support jobs or local businesses. The cultural argument would also benefit from a specific example of shared viewing or live theatre. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a concrete example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “However” and “In conclusion” help distinguish the argument’s stages. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, several transitions feel formulaic, including “To be precise,” “Moreover,” and “Hence,” and the links between claims and examples are not always strong. For instance, the statement about vacant cinema seats does not clearly follow from the point about online access. Use referencing and transitions more naturally, and make each example explicitly support the sentence before it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “digitalised world,” “online accessibility,” “cultural value,” and “financial contribution.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or repetitive: “the its not important,” “a ticket of watching movie,” and “importance of watching movies has not eroded” do not sound natural in context. “Cinemas,” “movies,” and “importance” are also repeated frequently. Aim for more precise phrases such as “the convenience of streaming services,” “ticket sales generate revenue,” and “cinemas retain their cultural significance.” Check word forms and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “because of the advent of online media” and a concession in the conclusion beginning “although technology has provided…”. The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “Some people argue the its not important,” “purchasing a ticket … contribute,” and “all the family members can watch films together,” where sentence construction, subject–verb agreement, or article use needs attention. The sentence beginning “Some people argue” also runs into the next idea without clear punctuation. Review agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete and correctly punctuated structure.
