Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response gives a clear preference for cinemas, especially in the statements that they help people relax and connect with culture. However, it does not adequately discuss both views in the question: the claim that online entertainment makes venues less important is not explained, and the economic importance of theatres and cinemas is not addressed. Cultural benefits are mentioned, but the ideas are brief and largely repeated rather than supported with reasons or examples. The conclusion, “cinemas is the best way to compare recent and old times,” does not fully summarise a developed argument. The response is also 143 words below the 250-word minimum, which leaves too little space to cover the task. Develop each side with specific explanations and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening, several statements about the value of cinemas, and a concluding sentence. The reader can identify the general position, and phrases such as “According to me” and “To conclude” signal the writer’s direction. However, the ideas do not progress through a clear discussion of the two opposing views; instead, cultural benefits are repeated across paragraphs, while the online and economic arguments are absent. Several points are joined in long, loosely connected strings, and the repeated use of “also” makes the links mechanical. Paragraphing and clearer topic sentences would help: set out the online-view argument first, then the continuing cultural and economic value, before giving a supported opinion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant words and phrases, including “digital age,” “relieve stress,” “old cultures,” and “recent trends,” so the general subject is usually understandable. There is also an attempt to express cultural value through references to “our roots.” However, vocabulary is repetitive, particularly “also,” “culture,” and “stress,” and some choices are unclear or unnatural, such as “culture dresses” and “compare recent and old times.” Spelling errors such as “teels” also reduce accuracy. To improve, use more precise language for the task’s key ideas—for example, distinguish online access from the shared experience of a live performance, and describe venues’ contribution to employment or cultural heritage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writing shows some ability to form simple statements and to link ideas, as in “Cinemas sometimes also introduce us to old culture.” However, sentence structures are mostly simple or run together, so there is little evidence of a controlled range of complex forms. Errors in agreement and articles appear in “entertainment is a best way” and “cinemas is the best way.” The opening body sentence also joins several ideas with commas without clear sentence boundaries, and the long sentence beginning “According to me” is difficult to follow because its clauses are not clearly structured. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, article use, and punctuation, then build longer sentences with clear subordinate clauses, such as explaining why cinemas remain valuable even when online options are available.
