Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people say that in the modern era, theatres and cinemas have less significance than previous age as people can watch all the entertainment online. While others think that theatres and cinemas still carry significant importance in both economic and cultural sectors. I strongly support the later opinion and will validate my stance in the following discussion.

With the digitalization of entertainment industry, now people can watch all forms of content online. Nowadays, people do not require to buy ticket for an individual movie or show to watch it. Rather they can purchase a package in online platforms like Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime etc. and watch a bunch of contents all together. Thus, they can get access to a lot more contents as well as save money. Therefore, the appeal for theatres and cinemas are decreasing among people. Furthermore, people now do not need to travel for watching a movie or enjoying a show as they can get entertained from home. Following these factors, it is now a common perception among people that theatres and cinemas are no longer important. As a result, many places having theatres and cinemas are shutting down because of the shortage of audience.

However, theatres and cinemas still contain cultural appeal for a city or a country. In many places, theatres and cinemas are running since a very long period of time and those became a cultural identity for those areas. For example, Monihar cinema hall in Jashore is the first movie theatre in Bangladesh and it has become very popular with time. This place contains some remarkable history about the cinemas of this country and holds a culturlal identity. Moreover, theatres and cinemas are economically significant for entertainment industry as a large number of revenue comes from these. Online platform can not produce revenue equivalent to cinemas and theatres. Also theatres and cinemas create a lot of job opportunities which ultimately benefits the local economy.

In conclusion, with some notable advantages of online entertainment media, it might seem theatres and cinemas are not valuable as before. But because of its significant cultural and economical impact, I strongly believe theatres and cinemas are as much important as before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and maintain a clear position: the introduction and conclusion support the continuing importance of theatres and cinemas. The first body paragraph explains the convenience and lower cost of online subscriptions, while the second gives cultural and economic reasons for retaining physical venues. The Monihar example makes the cultural point more concrete, and the reference to jobs supports the economic argument. This is a well-supported response overall. To strengthen it further, develop the economic comparison more carefully: the claim that online platforms cannot generate revenue equivalent to cinemas is asserted rather than demonstrated. A specific explanation or example would make this point more convincing and avoid broad generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, with the two opposing views presented in separate body paragraphs and a conclusion that returns to your position. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument. The examples are placed where they support the relevant points. Some connections are less smooth because several sentences in the first body paragraph repeat the idea that online viewing is convenient or attractive, and “Following these factors” is a somewhat mechanical transition into the public perception claim. You could improve progression by grouping related reasons and making the relationship between them explicit, while varying transitions and using clearer references to avoid repeating “theatres and cinemas.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “cultural identity,” “job opportunities,” “digitalization of entertainment,” and “economic impact.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common vocabulary. However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce precision: “the later opinion” should be “the latter view,” “carry significant importance” is unnatural, and “a bunch of contents” is too informal and imprecise for this essay. There are also spelling errors, including “culturlal,” and inconsistent forms such as “economical” where “economic” is more appropriate. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than choosing more elaborate wording; this will make your argument sound more controlled and academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning “as” and “because,” and most sentences remain understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely prevent the reader from following your meaning. For example, “than previous age” needs an article and a clearer plural form, while “people do not require to buy ticket” has an incorrect verb pattern and missing article. In “the appeal for theatres and cinemas are decreasing,” the subject and verb do not agree. There are also awkward sentence constructions, such as the opening fragment-like contrast beginning “While others think.” Review articles, agreement, and verb patterns, and check that each sentence has a complete, well-connected main clause.
