Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people often debate that theatres and cinemas are not significant in the modern world because people can entertain themselves online. While others argue that they are still important both economically and culturally.
The former idea is true to some extent since entertaining content is available online. It is convenient to watch movies and dramas online on mobile phones and laptops rather than going to cinemas and theatres to do so. Online, entertainment is readily available. It is better option for students and employees because they have tight schedule and lack time to visit a cinema. It is really hard for students and workers to travel a long distance only to enjoy themselves with their favourite movie on big screen. Also, it is budget-friendly and cheap. Students can use it after completing their assignments.
On the other hand, the latter idea cannot be neglected as it has its own significance. Theatres and cinemas play a crucial role in a countrys economy. They make a great contribution in a countrys wealth through ticket selling and giving job opportunities to many people. In addition, the atmosphere of cinemas and theatres is so synced with the movie that gives you in-depth emotional experience. Moreover, cinemas play a great role in remembering our historical heritage when they often showcase many historical programs. This cultural impact of cinema not only amaze the natives but also the tourists. They come to know about the culture of country.
In my opinion, both ideas have their own advantages and disadvantages. I think everyone has their own preferences according to which they select a suitable option. I prefer online entertainment as I struggle with time management as a student. Also, it is budget-friendly and convenient that makes it a suitable option for me.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You discuss both views and give a personal preference, so the response addresses the main parts of the task. The online-entertainment paragraph gives relevant reasons—convenience, limited time and lower cost—and the opposing paragraph identifies economic and cultural value. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that cinemas contribute to national wealth through ticket sales and jobs would be stronger with a specific explanation or example. The historical-programmes point is also unclear: explain how cinema preserves or presents heritage. Your conclusion says both options have advantages, but your preference for online entertainment is more personal than a fully developed overall judgement. Develop and support these ideas more evenly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The contrast between the two main arguments is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In addition” help signal progression. This coherent organisation is a strength. To make the progression more flexible and precise, avoid relying on a repeated list of connectors such as “Also,” “Moreover,” and “In addition.” Some references are also unclear: “the latter idea” requires the reader to look back, while “This cultural impact” does not specify exactly which aspect of cinema is being summarised. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “budget-friendly,” “job opportunities,” “emotional experience,” and “historical heritage.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. For instance, “entertain themselves online” is broad, “ticket selling” is not the natural phrase for cinema revenue, and “synced with the movie” does not clearly describe the viewing atmosphere. “Countrys” also needs an apostrophe, and “amaze” is not the appropriate form in “impact … not only amaze.” Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms so your vocabulary sounds more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including the opening “While” clause and the sentence beginning “because they have tight schedule.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make the relationships between ideas less clear. “While others argue…” is a sentence fragment and should be joined to the preceding clause. Other examples include “It is better option” (missing an article), “they have tight schedule” (article and number), and “the cultural impact … not only amaze” (subject–verb agreement). There are also punctuation and possessive-form issues. Practise complete sentence construction, articles, agreement and possessives, then proofread for these patterns while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
