Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Entertainment is a very important factor today in everyone's lives. Many new sources of entertainment have been introduced nowadays. Theatres and cinemas were the only medium earlier in the age, but the digital advancements have covered that as well.
Various kind of content is now very easily available and accessible online. Watching movies with family or friends while leisuring at home is a very feasible option for the working people in today's busy world. Online entertainment also gives the flexibility to watch your favorite content at your own convenient time and place.
Theatres and cinemas have now become outdated due to the advancements in technology, but they have been the pioneers of the entertainment medium. They give employment to many people and thus maintain the economic balance in this industry. Theatres also preserve the cultural values of the locality as many local stories of history and beliefs are usually performed there.
But I personally believe that online entertainment is much more better than the theatres or cinemas. They give us the flexibility and conveniency to enjoy at our own pace, time and place. There is no bounded restrictions with it. The charges are also minimal as compared to the usual visits of the offline mode. Both of these sources serve as per the preference of every individual as how they want to consume their content.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state a clear preference for online entertainment: the second paragraph explains convenience and flexibility, while the third recognises employment and the preservation of local stories. However, the discussion is uneven. The benefits of online viewing are explained, but the economic and cultural importance of theatres is asserted rather than illustrated, and your own opinion is not supported with a specific example. The claim that theatres are “outdated” also sits uneasily beside your recognition of their continuing value. The response is 25 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop the ideas. Add a relevant example and explain more fully why your preferred option outweighs the other view.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph on online entertainment, a paragraph on theatres’ benefits, and a concluding paragraph with your opinion. This makes the main line of discussion easy to follow. Basic linking phrases such as “but” and “thus” help connect ideas, although the final paragraph repeats the flexibility point from the second paragraph rather than advancing the argument. The transition from calling theatres “outdated” to describing their economic and cultural roles could also be made more logical. Use clearer links to signal contrast and qualification, and make each paragraph add a distinct reason or example. This would make cohesion less repetitive and the progression more convincing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital advancements,” “employment,” “cultural values,” and “local stories,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “economic balance” and “consume their content.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “various kind of content,” “while leisuring at home,” “conveniency,” and “bounded restrictions” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “The only medium earlier in the age” is also unclear. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision. Prefer familiar, accurate collocations and check word forms; for example, use “various kinds,” “relaxing at home,” and “no restrictions.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most ideas remain understandable. For instance, “They give employment to many people and thus maintain the economic balance in this industry” combines related points, while the sentence beginning “as many local stories” adds an explanation. Some grammatical errors remain. In “Various kind of content,” the plural noun requires “kinds”; “at your own convenient time” needs a different grammatical form, such as “at a time convenient to you”; and “There is no bounded restrictions” has both an incorrect determiner pattern and a plural-agreement problem. The comparison “much more better” also uses a double comparative. Review agreement, articles and comparative forms, and vary sentence structures while keeping them accurate.
