Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often thought by many that in the modern world, the existence of theatres and cinemas are no longer useful as people can now view Tv shows online, while others believe that they are still useful. In my opinion, viewing Tv shows online has made life easier for people however, it can't be as fun as watching it in the theatres or cinemas as new things can be learnt.

Viewing Tv shows online has made life easier for people, due to the fact that in the past, people do spend their money on transportation to go to the theatres or cinemas to watch entertainments and purchase tickets as it will be requested before entrying the theatres but in todays' world, watching entertainments online has helped saved the stress, time and money spent on going to the cinemas as one can just stay at home, be connected to the internet and watch their shows without going out.

On the other hand, watching entertainments online can be boring and less fun as you might be the only one watching it. This is one of the reasons people prefer to go to the cinema or theatres to watch movies as they get to learn alot of things by meeting other people. This is essential to some people because, at the theatres they get to learn about cultural heritage and how things are been in the past.

In conclusion, watching entertainments online is a way of the making things simple and less complicated for people while viewing Tv shows in the cinemas or Theatres has made people to meet and learn things from them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You present a relevant opinion: online viewing is convenient, but cinemas and theatres offer enjoyment and opportunities to learn. Both sides are included, and the examples about saving travel costs and encountering cultural heritage relate to the prompt. However, the discussion is uneven: the online-viewing paragraph gives several practical details, while the economic and cultural importance of venues is only briefly asserted. The prompt specifically asks about their economic and cultural roles, but the response does not explain their economic contribution, such as employment or local business activity. Your position is also not fully consistent: the introduction says online viewing is less fun, while the conclusion mainly summarises both sides without clearly reaffirming your judgement. Develop the second view and state your position more decisively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the shift between ideas. The main progression is understandable, but connections within paragraphs are sometimes mechanical or unclear. For example, “This is one of the reasons” refers broadly to the claim that online entertainment can be boring, and the link between meeting people and learning cultural heritage needs more explanation. The conclusion repeats the contrast rather than drawing the argument together or clearly restating your opinion. Use more precise referencing and develop each paragraph around a clear central point, with supporting explanation that directly follows from it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “transportation,” “purchase tickets,” “cultural heritage,” and “less complicated.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “watching entertainments,” “useful,” and “people,” which makes the discussion sound repetitive and sometimes imprecise. Several word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “watch entertainments,” “saved the stress,” and “learn alot of things.” “Tv shows” also does not always fit the prompt’s broader focus on entertainment and films. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check common word partnerships. For instance, you could refer to “streaming films,” “avoid the cost and inconvenience,” and “gain insight into cultural history.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “while” and a reason clause beginning “as.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “the existence of theatres and cinemas are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “people do spend” and “has helped saved” use incorrect verb forms. In “how things are been in the past,” the passive construction is faulty. Some sentences are also long and difficult to control, particularly the second paragraph’s extended explanation. Practise building accurate complex sentences, and check agreement and verb patterns when revising; clearer sentence boundaries would also improve control.
