Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In modern world, no doubt there are many digital options available for entertainment such as to watch movies online despite going to cinemas and threates. But we cannot neglect improtance of cinemas and threates becuase in that there was a real world experience and pleasure which cannot be found online.
To begin with, we live in a global village, so everyone has digital access to different forms of entertainment. Many platforms, such as Netflix, give users an excellent experience at home. Viewers simply sign in to an account, buy a subscription and choose from thousands of films according to their interests. In addition, people now use portable streaming boxes and projectors to create a cinema-like atmosphere at home. This is cheap and saves time. For example, a family or a group of friends can watch a film together at home using different platforms, and some of them are even free.
However, physical cinemas and theatres are still important because they offer something that streaming cannot. Firstly, they give people a chance to meet others, and going to the cinema is a popular way of going out with friends and family. Secondly, the experience is completely different, because many cinemas have 3D screens and 4K or higher resolution, which makes the audience feel as if they are inside the film. This is what attracts audiences the most. For instance, watching a film in a cinema is a pleasure in itself. You check the new releases, travel to the cinema, book tickets, buy snacks and cheer with other people.
In conclusion, although streaming is cheap and convenient, cinemas offer better picture quality, a shared atmosphere and a chance to socialise. For these reasons, I believe physical cinemas are still the more enjoyable way to watch films.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both perspectives and state a clear preference for physical cinemas in the conclusion. The points about streaming being convenient and inexpensive, and cinemas offering social contact and a distinctive viewing experience, are relevant to the prompt. However, the response focuses almost entirely on cinemas and films, while the task also asks about theatres and their cultural and economic importance. The online-viewing argument is explained mainly through convenience and cost, and the opposing view relies on a few examples rather than developing broader cultural or economic reasons. To strengthen the response, address theatres explicitly, explain the economic or cultural contribution of venues, and extend each main point with a clear explanation of its significance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting the benefits of online entertainment, a contrasting paragraph about cinemas, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the examples generally sit with the points they support. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, the linking is somewhat formulaic, and the second body paragraph moves through socialising, screen technology, and the cinema-going routine without fully connecting these details to one central claim. Use clearer topic sentences and vary transitions, while making the relationship between each example and its main idea more explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “digital access,” “subscription,” “portable streaming boxes,” “3D screens,” and “resolution.” These terms help communicate the contrast between home viewing and cinema-going. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems reduce precision, including “threates,” “improtant,” and “becuase.” Some expressions are also awkward or imprecise, such as “there was a real world experience” and “This is what attracts audiences the most.” The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas, but control of spelling, collocation, and more precise phrasing is inconsistent. Proofread carefully and choose expressions that describe the intended benefit directly, rather than relying on broad or repetitive wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “although,” and “so,” and most of the message remains clear. For example, “although streaming is cheap and convenient, cinemas offer better picture quality” is a well-controlled contrast. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in the opening: “In modern world” needs an article, and “despite going to cinemas” does not fit the sentence structure. The phrase “because in that there was a real world experience” also has an unclear construction and tense choice. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy and naturalness. Review articles and clause structure, and check that verb tense and sentence patterns match the meaning you intend.
