Student answer (Band 5.0)

There is an ongoing debate about whether theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online.

One key reason for this is that its not the only entertainment nowadays. This is primarily because new generation is growing in a more tech era than compared to those where theatres and cinemas hold a significant place in society and was the only enjoyment. Furthermore, it saves time and money as well for example commuting time to cinema, paying for the movie tickets with popcorns and drinks comes adds upto a heavy amount.

On the other hand, opponents claim that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally. This can be attributed to the fact that it helps in improving country's financial system and awareness on various life topics. For instance, more cinemas means more jobs, tax revenues, local business spillovers and tourism revenue. Moreover, movies based on real life scenarios provides knowledge and mindfulness to people.

In my opinion, theatres and cinemas is an experience one should always have in their life. I have been to theatre twice and quite few times to cinema and everytime I have visited I have never regretted my decision. I guess some movies are actually worth watching in cinemas and if its helping the economy and culture as well, its really not a bad idea. Watching movies at home can never be as exciting as in cinema with your friends and family holding popcorns and drinks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You discuss both perspectives and give a clear personal preference for cinemas, supported by your experience of visiting them. The economic points—jobs, tax revenue and tourism—are relevant, but the view in favour of online entertainment is only briefly explained, and several claims, such as the benefits of films based on real-life scenarios, need clearer development or examples. The response therefore addresses the task only partially, with ideas that remain limited and under-supported. It is also 28 words below the 250-word minimum; the 28 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop each side with a specific example and explain more fully why it supports your position.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an opening, a paragraph presenting the case for cinemas, a contrasting paragraph, and a personal conclusion. Phrases such as “On the other hand” and “In my opinion” help signal shifts in focus. However, the first body paragraph does not clearly establish the online-entertainment argument, and the opening largely repeats the question rather than setting out the essay’s direction. Some links are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “This is” and “Moreover,” while the final paragraph combines personal experience, economic benefits and a comparison with home viewing without a clear progression. Use topic sentences that state each paragraph’s main point, then order supporting explanations and examples logically.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “tax revenues,” “tourism revenue,” “financial system,” and “real life scenarios,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There is also an attempt to vary expression through phrases such as “This can be attributed to the fact that.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “new generation,” “more tech era,” “local business spillovers,” and “movies based on real life scenarios provides knowledge.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning less precise. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check whether nouns and verbs commonly occur together; for example, cinemas can “generate employment” and films can “raise awareness” of social issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “This is primarily because” and the sentence starting “For instance.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. Examples include “theatres and cinemas is an experience,” “movies … provides,” and “new generation is growing”; these should use appropriate plural agreement or a suitable article. The opening phrase “its not” also needs the contraction “it’s,” and the sentence about commuting and ticket costs becomes difficult to follow because its structure is not controlled. Practise checking each sentence for a clear subject and verb, then review agreement and punctuation before submitting.
