Student answer (Band 6.0)

Advancements of technology and internet have transformed the entertainment media in a different dimension as it is more accessible than before. Some argue that, people in digital era can enjoy all sorts of entertainment through internet, so cinema halls and plays have become less significant. In contrary, others believe that cinemas and theatres are crucial for generating money and social factors.

The first view illustrates that people now do not have to purchase tickets and go to the cineplex for watching movies. There are several streaming platforms including netflix and amazon prime that bought the online rights of the shows so that they can stream these programs online. Although, people need to wait for a period of two to three months, they can enjoy the movies in their own setup such as television, laptops and even in mobile phones too. Also, the subscription is way to cheaper than a movie ticket, and an individual can access all the contents just buying a subscription. Also, in many rural areas, there is no thearte or cineplex. So rather than travelling to city, many relies consuming medias in their own devices at a low cost.

On the other hand, theatres and cineplexes used to be known as the centre for socialization as it was not only about watching a movie, rather it was an experience. People laugh together watching a funny scene, getting emotional displays sense of belongingness. For instance, there was a cinema hall in Dhaka called "Chalchitra", where people used to go with their families in the weekends and watching movies together was a leisure activity back then. Also, there were several groups created and people of same taste in films used to hang out together. It was also a source of income for some businessmen. Also, watching films in theatres directly benefits the economy because the owners paid tax to the government.

I passively agree with the second view because theatres and cinemas have social significance and nowadays people are getting more isolated because of the alienation created by the internet. Individuals now do not have places to go and communicate with people, theatres might help them communicating and socialize with others.

To sum up, it is crucial for the people to have something for the leisure and it needs to be a outdoor activity. Watching movies and plays in theatre might be helpful for the people as consuming media through internet is an isolated activity, and it might hamper both the mental and physical health/

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear, though qualified, opinion: “I passively agree with the second view.” The discussion of online viewing is relevant and supported with examples such as streaming subscriptions and limited access to cinemas in rural areas. You also explain the social value of shared viewing and mention employment and tax revenue, so the response covers the economic and cultural dimensions. This meets the task well overall, but the economic case is less developed than the cultural one: tax is mentioned without explaining wider effects such as jobs or local business. Some claims, including that online media harms health, would also benefit from a specific explanation or example. Develop these points more fully to make the argument consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. The progression from online convenience to the social and economic role of venues is easy to follow, and examples such as the Dhaka cinema help anchor the discussion. You use linking expressions including “On the other hand” and “To sum up.” However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Also,” and the final opinion and conclusion overlap rather than adding distinct stages to the argument. Some references are unclear, as in “it was not only about watching a movie,” where the referent of “it” is vague. Vary transitions and make links between claims more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “streaming platforms,” “subscription,” “socialization,” “source of income,” and “belongingness.” These choices help communicate both practical and cultural arguments, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common phrasing, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “transformed … in a different dimension,” “the subscription is way to cheaper,” and “consuming medias.” Spelling and form errors such as “thearte” and “netflix” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and check countable nouns and proper names: for example, use “media” rather than “medias,” and “Netflix” with a capital letter. More precise vocabulary would make the argument sound more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a relative clause in “platforms … that bought the online rights” and a contrast clause beginning “Although.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. For example, “people of same taste … used to hang out” needs an article, while “many relies consuming medias” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. The sentence “People laugh together watching a funny scene, getting emotional displays sense of belongingness” is difficult to parse because its clauses are not connected clearly. There are also punctuation and spacing issues, such as the comma after “Although” and missing spaces after commas. Practise accurate clause construction, articles, and subject–verb agreement while retaining your complex sentences.
