Student answer (Band 6.0)
While some people argue that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as we have access to this entertainment at home via the internet, others feel that theatre and cinemas are still culturally and economically important. I agree with the later latter view.
One major advantage of having cinemas and theatres is that it provides people of different backgrounds a common social place to experience film at a reasonable cost outside of their homes. Single people get to socialize with strangers with similar interests while families get to enjoy their family time outside of their homes. Secondly, theatres and cinemas generate jobs and revenue which is beneficial for the countries economy and preserve culture as well.
However, people who oppose cinemas and theatres argue that in this digital age anyone can experience film or tv shows via online streaming services such as Netflix. So, instead of building cinemas and theatres we can utilize land in a better way by contructing schools, hospitals and offices as land is a finite resource and with a growing population in todays world would be a better use of said resource.
In conclusion, although some argue that cinemas and theatres are obsolete and provide no value in this digital age I, would disagree that theatres and cinemas are equally as important as schools, hospitals and offices as it provides an outlet of entertainment at a reasonable cost to the general public and they get to experience a variety of different cultures in a social setting as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both perspectives and state your position clearly in the introduction (“I agree with the latter view”), then support the value of cinemas through social interaction, employment, revenue and cultural preservation. The opposing view is also relevantly represented through online streaming and competing uses for land. However, these points are brief: the economic and cultural benefits are asserted rather than illustrated, and the case for replacing venues with schools or hospitals could be explained more fully. The conclusion also introduces a comparison with essential services that is not developed in the body. The response is 243 words, seven words below the 250-word minimum; 13 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Meeting the minimum and extending the main ideas with specific examples would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting venues, a paragraph presenting the opposing view, and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Secondly,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers track the argument. Some connections are less smooth or precise. For example, the first body paragraph moves from social benefits to jobs, revenue and cultural preservation without explaining how these points relate, while the conclusion’s comparison with schools, hospitals and offices feels newly introduced. The repeated references to “cinemas and theatres” also make cohesion somewhat mechanical. Group related points and use clearer links between claims and explanations to create more continuous progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “online streaming services,” “finite resource,” “generate jobs and revenue,” and “social setting.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrases show an attempt to discuss broader economic and cultural effects. However, several expressions are imprecise or awkward, such as “experience film,” “countries economy,” and “a variety of different cultures.” There are also spelling and word-form slips, including “contructing” and “todays,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, especially when describing the benefits of venues and the alternative use of land. Proofreading for spelling and possessives would also improve control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “although some argue…” and a conditional-style explanation of how different groups use venues. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. In “One major advantage … is that it provides,” the pronoun does not clearly agree with the plural subject “cinemas and theatres”; “which are beneficial” would be clearer. The conclusion contains an unnecessary comma after “I,” and “as it provides” has an unclear singular reference to plural venues. There are also missing apostrophes in possessives such as “countries economy.” Check agreement, reference, and punctuation, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
