Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some individuals argue that in this modern digital era, theaters and cinemas are no longer important for people because they can watch all the entertainment they want online on mobile phones, laptop, smart TVs and other digital devices. While critics argue that theatres and cinemas still paly a vitals role in both economic and cultural field. In this essay I will discuss both views and also give my opinion that why cinemas and theatres are important both economically and culturally.
On one hand, some people argue that in this modern era theatres and cinemas are no longer important for individuals entertainment because it has several reasons. Firstly, due to modern technology there is a siesmic shift from watching movies in theatres and cinemas toward online platforms. Mobile phones, computers and other digital devices made it more convenient and easy to watch movies and other entertainment. Now people do not have to wait in a long line to buy a ticket for cinemas to watch movies. For instance in the past you have to wait for a long time to buy a single ticket however, online platforms make entertainment more time saving and flexible people can watch any kind of programs anytime anywhere.
On the hand, critics argue that theatres and cinemas play an important role both economically and culturally, because theatres are one the most important source of economic development and it also give a cultural identity to a nation. For example the income from selling ticket of a movie in cinemas can help a lot economically and can be used in other social development programs. Theatres and cinemas are also a part culture and it gives identity to different cultures.
Consequently, technology and digital platforms made entertainment more convenient and flexible. However, from my perspective theatres and cinemas are still important both culturally and economically.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state your position: the introduction promises to discuss each side, and the conclusion says theatres and cinemas remain important economically and culturally. The online-entertainment paragraph gives relevant reasons, including convenience and avoiding ticket queues. However, the discussion of the opposing view is much less developed: ticket income is mentioned, but the link to wider economic benefits is not explained, and cultural identity is asserted rather than illustrated. Your opinion is clear at the end, but it would be stronger if explained and supported throughout. Develop each main point with a specific example and fuller reasoning. The response meets the stated length requirement; eight words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Signposts such as “On one hand,” “On the hand,” and “Consequently” help readers follow the broad direction. However, progression within paragraphs is limited: several points are placed together without fully showing how one leads to the next, and the second viewpoint receives little elaboration. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated references to “modern era” and “theatres and cinemas.” Use accurate transitions, make each paragraph’s central claim explicit, and connect examples back to that claim. Clearer referencing would also help readers see what “it” refers to in sentences about theatres and cinemas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “digital platforms,” “economic development,” “cultural identity,” and “flexible,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more ambitious wording, such as “seismic shift,” but inaccurate spelling and collocation reduce precision. Examples include “paly a vitals role,” “siesmic shift,” “one the most important source,” and “part culture.” Some wording is repetitive, particularly “important” and “entertainment,” and phrases such as “time saving” are not expressed naturally in context. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. A wider set of precise terms for cultural value and economic impact would help you explain the two sides more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast clause beginning “While critics argue…” and a reason clause with “because.” This gives the response some structural variety, but control is uneven, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to process. For example, “While critics argue…” is a fragment because it is not joined to a main clause, and “people do not have to wait” shifts awkwardly into “in the past you have to wait.” Agreement and article errors appear in “it also give” and “one the most important source,” while “it gives identity” has an unclear singular reference. Practise complete sentences, consistent tense, and subject–verb agreement. Punctuate longer sentences so that the relationships between ideas remain clear.
