Student answer (Band 5.5)
IN TODAY'S DIGITAL WORLD, SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT THEATRES AND CINEMAS ARE LOSING THEIR VALUE BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE EASY ACCESS TO THE ENTERTAINMENT OPTIONS ONLINE. HOWEVER, OTHERS ARGUE THAT THESE PLACES PLAYS AN CRUCIAL ROLE IN BOTH THE ECONOMY AND CULTURE. IN MY OPINION, ALTHOUGH WATCHING MOVIES ONLINE IS VERY CONVENIENT BUT SOMEHOW I BELIEVE THAT CINEMAS AND THEATRES STILL PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN OUR LIVES.
TO BEGIN WITH, MANY PEOPLE PREFER WATCHING MOVIES ONLINE BECAUSE IT IS CHEAP AND VERY CONVENIENT. ANYONE CAN WATCH MOVIE AT HOME THROUGH MOBILE PHONES OR TV WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY ON EXPENSIVE TICKETS OR TRAVELLING. IN ADDITION, ONLINE PLATFORMS OFFERS THOUSANDS OF WEBSERIES, SHOWS AND MOVIES THAT PEOPLE CAN WATCH ANYTIME AND ANYWHERE WHEREEVER THEY LIKE. FOR INSTANCE, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO WALK ON TREADMILL AND WHEN I WALK I WATCH MOVIES ON MY PHONES, WHICH MAKES WALKING EASY BECAUSE MY MIND GETS DIVERTED TOWARDS THE MOVIE OR SHOW.
HOWEVER, CINEMAS AND THEATRES ARE STILL IMPORTANT FOR LOCAL ECONOMIES AND CULTURAL LIFE. FIRST, CINEMAS CREATE MANY JOBS FOR STAFF. SECOND, WATCHING A FILM ON BIGGER SCREEN WITH HIGH QUALITY SOUND PROVIDES AN ANOTHER LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE THAT A PHONE CAN NOT GIVE. MOREOVER, GOING TO THE THEATRE IS ALSO AN MEAN OF SOCIALISING WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILIES ON WEEKENDS.
IN CONCLUSION, EVEN THOUGH WATCHING MOVIES ONLINE IS VERY EASY AND COMFORTABLE, BUT CINEMAS AND THEATRES ARE STILL NECESSARY. THEY PROVIDE PEOPLE EXTRA FUN EXPERIENCE THAT THEY CAN NOT GET AT HOMES.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both perspectives and state a clear preference: cinemas and theatres remain important despite the convenience of online viewing. The points about affordability and access address the online view, while jobs, the large-screen experience and socialising support the opposing view. However, the economic and cultural importance is only briefly explained; for example, you mention jobs but do not show how venues benefit local businesses, and the cultural case is not developed beyond the shared experience. Your treadmill example is relevant to convenience but takes space without adding much to the broader argument. The response is also one word below the required minimum. Develop each side with a more specific explanation or example, especially the cultural and economic effects.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for online entertainment, a contrasting paragraph for venues, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “However,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. Within the body paragraphs, the ideas are generally grouped by viewpoint, and the examples follow the claims they illustrate. Some connections are mechanical, however, particularly the sequence “First” and “Second,” and the conclusion largely repeats the introduction rather than drawing the discussion together. The treadmill example also interrupts the broader argument slightly. To strengthen cohesion, use more varied links between claims and explanations, and make the final paragraph synthesise the main reasons for your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “digital world,” “online platforms,” “local economies,” “cultural life,” and “socialising.” This gives the response a relevant range, and most word choices are understandable. However, several phrases are imprecise or awkward, such as “extra fun experience,” “an another level,” and “a mean of socialising.” Repetition of “movies,” “watch,” and “important” also limits flexibility. Some expressions, including “mind gets diverted towards,” do not sound natural in this context. Aim for more precise collocations and vary key terms—for example, refer to “films,” “screening venues,” or “shared cultural experiences” where appropriate. Proofreading for spelling and word forms would also improve accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a concession in the introduction and a relative clause in “anywhere wherever they like.” The main meaning is generally clear, but some errors occur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “these places plays,” “platforms offers,” and “cinemas and theatres still plays”; these subjects require plural verb forms. The opening sentence of the conclusion uses “even though” and “but” together, creating a faulty structure, while “a phone can not give” would be more naturally expressed with a correctly formed modal construction. There are also article errors in phrases such as “an another level.” Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check that each complex sentence has a complete, correctly linked structure.
