IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People hold different opinions regarding theatres and cinemas. Some believe that these are no longer important in this technological era; others argue that these are still important for both the economy and culture. This essay will discuss both perspectives before presenting my own opinion.

One of the strongest reasons why individuals believe it's no longer important is that everyone nowadays has their own device in their hand, so they can enjoy what they want within a minute. So, they do not need to go to the theatres or cinema by wasting their precious time. Social media such as Facebook and YouTube play a pivotal role here. These are much more convenient compared to the cinema or theatres. Individuals can have entertainment as they want, lying on the bed instead of going anywhere. A compelling example can be seen in the USA, where Netflix has changed the concept of entertainment. People stay at home on the weekend and enjoy numerous movies or films on this platform and also arrange parties to enjoy Netflix together. This example illustrates the practical importance of online entertainment.

On the other hand, a large number of people are engaged with cinema and theatres. Their families depend on that particular industry; also, a large number of artists rely on cinema and theatres because they only get paid when people go to cinemas and watch their work. In some parts of the globe, these are the symbols of a culture. In Bangladesh, there is a rich tradition of theatres and cinema, where the general public enjoys their vacation watching movies or films in a theatre. This presents the overall importance of theatres and cinema.

In conclusion, both viewpoints have valid reasons. However, I believe that online entertainment is more convenient than going to theatres or cinemas because it offers numerous advantages for both individuals and society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear preference for online entertainment, with relevant examples such as Netflix in the USA and cinema-going in Bangladesh. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the convenience argument has several supporting details, while the economic and cultural case is asserted more than explained. For example, you mention families and artists depending on the industry, but do not show how cinemas contribute economically or why shared viewing matters culturally. Your conclusion says online entertainment offers advantages “for both individuals and society,” but the social advantage is not established in the essay. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and ensure the final opinion follows from the reasons presented.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, connections can feel mechanical or unclear. The repeated “So” in the first body paragraph and the sequence “also” followed by a semicolon do not always show precisely how ideas relate. Some references are also broad: “These” could refer to theatres and cinemas, or to social media platforms. Use a wider range of linking methods, and make pronoun references explicit. More deliberate progression—from claim, to explanation, to example—would make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including phrases such as “pivotal role,” “precious time,” “rich tradition,” and “symbols of a culture.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and meaning remains clear. Some wording is imprecise or repetitive, however: “enjoy what they want” and “numerous movies or films” are broad, while “theatres and cinema” is repeated frequently. There are also collocation issues, such as “engaged with cinema and theatres” and “arrange parties to enjoy Netflix together.” Choose more precise expressions for the activity or benefit being discussed, and vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives such as “film venues,” “screening,” or “streaming services.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the opening contrast between “Some believe…” and “others argue…” and the relative clause “where the general public enjoys…”. Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In “everyone nowadays has their own device in their hand,” the singular subject and plural possessive are not well matched; “people have their own devices” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “Their families depend on that particular industry; also…” joins ideas awkwardly, and “when people go to cinemas and watch their work” has an unclear reference to “their.” Review agreement, sentence boundaries, and pronoun reference, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
