Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that the importance of theatres and cinemas are no longer in the modern period as through the online people can watch any kind of entertainments they want. However, others believed that both economically and culturally theatres and movies are still significant. In this essay I will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On the one hand, people think that the importance of the theatres and movies are no longer because of the digitalisation. It is true that, nowadays people can easily access to the movies and play through the online. There are plenty of online platforms in where people can watch movies, play, and TV series. These platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and others are not expensive. For example, to watch a single movie in cinema hall costs more than the monthly subscription cost of these platforms. In addition, people can watch the movies from illegal website even in the first day of movie release. Therefore, people love to stay home rather than watch movies or plays go to the cinema halls and theatres.

On the other hand, some people believe that cinemas and theatres are still important both economically and culturally. First of all, most of the revenue of movies and plays come from the ticket they sell to the public. If people watch movies and plays at home then the industry will die soon, as the producers and actresses and the whole team who work to make these (plays and movies) should be paid. Secondly, cinemas and theatres represent the culture of a particular country because it holds the particular country rituals and culture and it is important that it give people entertainment to go out for cinema and theatres. For example, family members go to the cinema to watch movies its kind of a good source of entertainment. Therefore, both economically and culturally its important.

In my opinion, I think in the age of modernity the importance of theatres and cinema loses its attraction among the many people but people still love to go watch movies and theatres outside as its a cultural norm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position, so the response covers the main parts of the task. The online-entertainment argument is supported with relevant examples, including subscription platforms and the lower cost of watching at home. You also explain that ticket sales support the film industry and that venues can provide a shared cultural experience. However, the economic point is asserted rather than explored, and the cultural explanation is unclear: saying venues “hold the particular country rituals and culture” does not show precisely how they do this. Your opinion appears mainly in the introduction and conclusion, and the conclusion partly repeats the opposing view rather than clearly weighing the two sides. Develop these ideas and make your judgement more explicit throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding opinion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” helps readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, examples generally follow the claims they support. However, some links are mechanical or do not express the relationship clearly. For instance, “Therefore” introduces a conclusion after the cultural example without fully showing how it follows, while “In addition” connects the point about legal platforms to illegal websites without clarifying the contrast. References such as “these” in “make these (plays and movies)” are also awkward. Use more precise transitions and connect each example explicitly to its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic vocabulary to discuss the issue, including “digitalisation,” “online platforms,” “monthly subscription,” “revenue,” and “cultural norm.” This gives you a workable range, and the main meaning is generally clear. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “importance … are no longer,” “access to the movies and play through the online,” and “theatres and movies” do not sound natural in context. “Theatres,” “cinemas,” “movies,” and “plays” are also sometimes used imprecisely, which blurs the distinction between venues and entertainment. Aim for accurate topic-specific phrases such as “the appeal of cinemas has declined” and “watch films online,” and vary repeated wording while keeping the meaning precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If people watch movies and plays at home then the industry will die soon” and clauses introduced by “because.” These attempts help you explain causes and consequences, and the message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In the opening, “the importance … are” has subject–verb disagreement; “people can easily access to” uses an incorrect verb pattern; and “it give people” has an agreement error. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “in the first day” and “go to cinema.” To improve, check agreement and verb patterns, and revise articles and prepositions. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
