Student answer (Band 6.5)

People often argue whether theatres and cinemas are still relevent in this era of technology and digital communication. While some say that online platforms are sufficient for entertainment, others believe that theatres and cinema halls have significant role in our economy and culture. I personally think that the experience of movie theaters can never be replaced by entertainment available online.

People who belive movie halls and theatres are no longer importatant say that online platforms are more convenient. Many online entertainment channels provide monthly or yearly subscriptions that is cheaper than watching movies in the cinemas. Along with providing a more personal experience, it also saves the delay and expense related to travelling to the theatres. Another argument in favour of online platforms such as Netflix and other entertainment websites, is that they offer a variety of movies, series and shows in different languages and from different countries of the world. In contrast, only a limited range of entertainment is available in the offline movie threatres, which might not meet the preferences of the viewers. Thereby, less and less people attend offlines shows.

On the other hand, cinema halls and theatres provide economical and cultural benefits to the society. Firstly, in some countries movie threaters provide a major contribution to the economy. Furthermore, many local businesses such as resturants and food carts are developed surrounding cinema halls. Therefore, movie theatres provide employment to a large number of people and substantially contribute to the economic development of the country. Moreover, cinemas and threatres have significant impact of a countries culture and tradition. People go to cinema with their loved ones, spend a considerable amount of time, which encourages social bonding and strengthens interpersonal relationships. Theatres often display plays that reflects cutural identity, historical references and traditional beliefs, which makes them unreplacable.

In conlcusion, digital entertainment offers easy availability, personalized experience and convenience. However, I belive theatres and cinema halls are essential as they provide job opportunities, contribute to local economic developmet and have cultural significance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and make your own position clear in the introduction and conclusion: you argue that the cinema experience cannot be replaced and that venues remain economically and culturally important. The discussion is relevant and supported with examples, including employment and nearby food businesses, as well as social bonding and culturally significant plays. This gives the response a clear, developed argument. Some support is still broad rather than specific: for example, the claim that cinemas make a “major contribution” to some economies is not illustrated with a concrete example, and the cultural point could explain more precisely how theatres preserve traditions. Developing these points with a specific case or clearer cause-and-effect would make the support more convincing and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: the introduction presents the debate and your view, the two body paragraphs discuss opposing positions, and the conclusion restates your judgement. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “Firstly,” and “Moreover” help readers follow the argument. The ideas within each paragraph are generally ordered logically, moving from convenience and choice to economic and cultural benefits. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, with several sentences beginning with “Furthermore,” “Therefore,” or “Moreover.” There are also occasional unclear references, such as “it” in the online-platform paragraph, which could refer to more than one benefit. Varying transitions and making references explicit would improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “personalized experience,” “economic development,” “social bonding,” and “cultural identity.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccuracies. However, attempts at more formal or less common wording are not always controlled: “significant impact of a countries culture” is an awkward collocation, while “unreplacable” and “offlines shows” show spelling or word-form problems. There is also repetition of “movie theatres,” “cinema halls,” and “entertainment.” Aim for more accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; using precise alternatives such as “cinema attendance” or “cultural heritage” can add flexibility without forcing uncommon vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses (“While some say…”) and cause-and-effect structures (“Therefore…”). Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and articles: “subscriptions that is cheaper” should use a plural verb, and “have significant role” needs an article. In “plays that reflects,” the verb should agree with the plural subject; “People go to cinema” also needs an article or plural form. The sentence beginning “People go to cinema…” is a fragment because it lacks a complete main clause. Review agreement, articles, and sentence completeness, while continuing to use varied structures.
