Some people say that in the digital age, theatres and cinemas are no longer important as people can watch all the entertainment they want online. Others argue that theatres and cinemas are still important both economically and culturally.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

In this advanced era, some people think that theaters and cinema are not significant value because if people want any film, they can watch online. While, other people think that theters and cenima have their strong worth till now because they both are important as economically and traditionally. In my opinion, both are essential for our society benefits.

Firstly, I strongly believe that theaters and cinema have their own power which cannot replaced by internet or online. Infact, they are very important for oldery people, because they memorise their time when they go at theaters or cinema. Moreover, they have more benefits for economically and culturally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a general opinion—“both are essential for our society”—and begin to explain why cinemas may matter to older people. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it does not explain the view that online entertainment makes venues unnecessary, and the economic and cultural importance of theatres and cinemas is merely asserted, not supported with reasons or examples. The point about older people remembering visits is relevant but unclear and too brief to develop. The response also falls short of the required minimum length, leaving the discussion and your position substantially incomplete. To improve, explain both sides separately, give specific supporting examples, and make your own view clear throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is a basic attempt to organise the response: the opening introduces the two views and your opinion, and “Firstly” signals the start of a supporting point. The ideas are nevertheless too limited to form a clear progression, and there is no developed discussion of the opposing view or concluding paragraph. Connections between claims are also weak: “Moreover” introduces economic and cultural benefits, but no explanation follows. The opening’s “While” construction is left as a fragment rather than forming a complete contrast. Build a clear sequence with separate paragraphs for each view and your opinion, and use linking expressions only when the relationship between ideas is fully stated.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “digital era,” “online,” “economically,” and “culturally,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “not significant value,” “their strong worth,” and “important as economically and traditionally.” There are also spelling errors in “theters,” “cenima,” and “Infact,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe venues as “of little importance,” say they “retain cultural and economic value,” and refer to “older generations” rather than “oldery people.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple statements and an attempt at a complex sentence beginning “because,” as well as a contrast introduced by “While.” However, the range remains limited, and errors in sentence construction and grammatical patterns are frequent enough to make parts difficult to interpret. For example, “While, other people think…” is not a complete sentence, and “which cannot replaced by internet” is missing the passive auxiliary and an article. “They are important as economically and culturally” also uses an incorrect structure. Practise forming complete contrast clauses and accurate passive constructions, such as “which cannot be replaced by the internet,” and check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
