IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The formation of rain-shadow deserts

The formation of rain-shadow deserts

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The diagram illustrates how a rain-shadow desert is formed through a series of natural atmospheric processes.

Overall, the process begins with moist air moving inland from the sea and ends with the formation of a dry desert on the leeward side of a mountain range. The key stages involve the uplift and cooling of moist air, rainfall on one side of the mountain, and the movement of dry air towards inland areas.

Initially, moist winds blow from the sea towards the coast. When these air masses reach a mountain range, they are forced to rise along the windward side. As the air ascends, it expands and cools, causing water vapour to condense into clouds. Once sufficient condensation has occurred, precipitation takes place, and rain falls heavily on the windward slope. Consequently, most of the moisture is released before the air crosses the mountain.

After reaching the summit, the remaining air descends the leeward side of the mountain. During its descent, it becomes warmer and considerably drier because it has already lost the majority of its moisture. This dry air then continues travelling across inland regions for thousands of kilometres without producing further rainfall. As a result, the land receives little or no precipitation, creating extremely arid conditions. Ultimately, this lack of rainfall leads to the formation of a rain-shadow desert.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response is excellent. You have successfully identified and described all the key stages of the rain-shadow desert formation process, from the initial moist air movement to the final arid conditions. The overview provided in the second paragraph effectively captures the essence of the process, and the subsequent paragraphs provide a logical, step-by-step breakdown of the mechanism. You have made clear comparisons between the windward and leeward sides of the mountain, which is essential for this task. The information is accurate and well-developed, leaving no part of the diagram unaddressed. This is a comprehensive and well-structured summary that fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The response is highly coherent. The information is logically sequenced, following the natural progression of the atmospheric process. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Initially', 'Once', 'Consequently', 'After reaching', and 'As a result', which guide the reader smoothly through the explanation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the detailed process steps. The flow of ideas is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking. The structure is clear and professional, making the text very easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You have demonstrated a wide and precise range of vocabulary throughout the response. The use of subject-specific terminology such as 'atmospheric processes', 'windward side', 'leeward side', 'condense', 'precipitation', and 'arid conditions' is accurate and appropriate for an academic report. The language is sophisticated and used with natural control. There are no errors in word choice or collocation, and the vocabulary effectively conveys the technical nature of the process without being overly simplistic or repetitive. This represents a high level of lexical proficiency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The response displays a wide range of grammatical structures with high accuracy. You have successfully employed complex sentences, such as 'As the air ascends, it expands and cools, causing water vapour to condense into clouds' and 'During its descent, it becomes warmer and considerably drier because it has already lost the majority of its moisture.' Punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of these complex structures. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and aspect is consistent throughout the description of the process. There are no grammatical slips that impede communication.
