The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates the process by which a rain-shadow desert is formed, showing how moist air from the sea produces rainfall on one side of a mountain range and creates a dry region on the opposite side.

Overall, the process consists of seven main stages, beginning with winds carrying moist air from the sea towards the coast and ending with dry air reaching inland areas, where a rain-shadow desert develops. The key feature is that most of the moisture is released as precipitation on the windward side of the mountains.

Initially, winds approach the coast from the sea and are forced upwards as they encounter the mountain range. As the moist air rises along the windward side, it becomes progressively cooler. Consequently, clouds form at higher altitudes, eventually producing substantial rainfall over the windward slopes. This process removes much of the moisture from the air.

After crossing the mountain peak, the now-dry air descends on the leeward side. As it moves downwards, it continues over the mountains towards the inland region. Unlike the windward side, there is little or no rainfall on this side because most of the moisture has already been lost. The resulting dry winds therefore reach the inland area, where the lack of precipitation leads to the formation of a rain-shadow desert.

Thus, the mountain range effectively creates two contrasting environments: a wetter windward side and an extremely dry leeward region.
