The diagram illustrates the process by which one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

Overall, the process consists of seven main stages, beginning with moist wind approaching the coast and ending with dry air reaching inland areas, where a rain-shadow desert is formed.

Initially, moist wind approaches the coast before being forced upwards over the mountain. As the air rises to a higher altitude, it gradually cools, causing clouds to form. These clouds then produce rainfall on the mountain's coastal side, resulting in the loss of moisture from the air. As a result, the air becomes increasingly dry as it passes over the mountain range.

In the next stage, the now-dry air moves towards the leeward side, where it continues to descend down the mountain. As the air descends, it becomes warmer and remains largely free of moisture. Subsequently, the dry air reaches the inland areas, resulting in the formation of a rain-shadow desert.
