The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

The diagram illustrates the step by step process of how a rain shadow desert is formed through the interaction of prevailing winds, ocean moisture, and mountain ranges.

Overall, the process begins over the ocean with moisture laden air and progresses across a coastal mountain barrier, where precipitation is released on one side, leaving dry air to create arid conditions on the opposite side.

Initially, moist winds approach the coastal from over the sea and are pushed upwards upon encountering a mountain range. As this moist air ascends the windward side, it cools, leading to cloud formation and subsequent rain showers. Consequently, most of the atmospheric moisture is deposited on this coastal flank of the mountain.

Once over the summit, the remaining air, now depleted of moisture, continues its movement down the leeward side. As these dry winds descend into inland areas spanning thousands of kilometres, they absorb available surface moisture rather than bringing rainfall. Over time, this continuous flow of dry air prevents precipitation in the region, ultimately forming a rain shadow desert.
