IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The formation of rain-shadow deserts
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the genesis of rain-shadow deserts.
Overall, the process of rain-shadow desert formation includes various sub-processes like starting from the winds approaching the coast then moving upward till it turns into cloud and past rain processes like flow of dry air over the mountains till it reaches the inland areas, consequencing the desert formation.
The process of desert formation starts over the sea and the coastal region where the winds move from sea to the coast. After moving several kilometres straight, the winds meet the mountains where the direction of the winds changes from straight to upward direction. As the winds move are pushed upward, it starts getting moist and cool.
Furthermore, the cool and moist air gets converted into the clouds which leads to increase in chance of rainfall. Moreover, the winds now start to lean downward due to which it becomes dry in nature. Consequently, these dry winds reaches the land bed where the dryness of the air results in the formation of desert conditions. Thus, all these processes substancially repacate to the formation of rain-shadow deserts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the process, from the sea to the inland desert. However, the description of the scientific process is slightly inaccurate; for instance, the text claims air becomes 'moist' as it is pushed upward, whereas it actually cools and loses moisture as precipitation. The overview is present but could be more clearly defined. While the main features are reported, the explanation of the 'rain-shadow' mechanism lacks precision in its scientific terminology, which limits the clarity of the report. The response addresses the prompt effectively but would benefit from more accurate technical descriptions of the meteorological stages shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, a body paragraph for the initial stages, and a concluding body paragraph for the final stages. Paragraphing is used appropriately. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' are used to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of information is generally clear, following the sequence of the diagram from the sea to the mountain and finally the inland area. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences are slightly repetitive in their structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with attempts at topic-specific language like 'genesis', 'sub-processes', and 'inland areas'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'consequencing the desert formation' and 'land bed', which are not standard English. The word 'repacate' appears to be a misspelling or non-existent term. While the range is sufficient to convey the main points, the lack of precision in scientific vocabulary prevents a higher score. More accurate terminology related to geography or meteorology would improve the quality of the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('these dry winds reaches') and awkward phrasing ('As the winds move are pushed upward'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are slightly clunky due to word order issues. While the meaning is rarely impeded, the frequency of these minor errors indicates a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of complex sentence construction. The control of grammar is sufficient for a 6.0 band level.
