The diagram illustrates the natural process involved in the formation of rain on the windward side of a mountain range and the subsequent creation of a rain-shadow desert on the leeward side.
Overall, the process comprises seven sequential stages, starting with ocean winds moving inland and culminating in dry conditions in far inland areas.
Initially, winds laden with moisture travel over the sea towards the coast. Upon reaching the land, these winds are pushed upwards by the mountain barrier. As this moist air ascends, it gradually cools, leading to condensation and the formation of clouds. Consequently, precipitation occurs in the form of rain on the windward side of the mountain.
Following the rainfall, the remaining dry air continues its movement over the peak and down the leeward side of the mountain. As these dry winds travel further inland, they absorb existing moisture rather than releasing rain. Ultimately, this lack of precipitation results in the formation of a rain-shadow desert in the inland region, stretching thousands of kilometres away from the coast.
