The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates how a type of desert known as a rain-shadow desert is formed.

Overall, the formation of a rain-shadow desert is closely connected to the movement of moist air over a mountain range. While the windward side of the mountains receives significant rainfall, the leeward side remains dry because most of the moisture has already fallen as rain. This difference in precipitation eventually results in desert conditions.

Initially, moist air from the ocean is blown towards a mountain range. As the air reaches the mountains, it is forced to rise to a higher altitude. During this process, the air cools, causing water vapour to condense and form clouds. As a result, rainfall occurs on the side of the mountain facing the ocean.

After losing much of its moisture, the air continues to move over the mountain peaks and descends on the opposite side. As it moves downwards, the air becomes warmer and drier. Since very little moisture remains in the air, only a small amount of rainfall occurs on this side of the mountain.

Consequently, the land on the leeward side receives insufficient rainfall to support substantial vegetation. Over time, the area becomes extremely dry and develops into a rain-shadow desert.
