The diagram below shows how one type of desert, known as a rain-shadow desert, is formed.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates the seven-step natural process by which a rain-shadow desert forms due to atmospheric movements over a mountain barrier spanning thousands of kilometres.

Overall, the process relies on prevailing maritime winds encountering physical topography. It is divided into two main phases: moisture condensation and rainfall on the windward side, followed by the movement of dry air across the leeward side to form an inland desert.

Initially, moist ocean winds approach the coast and are pushed upwards upon encountering mountains. As this air ascends the windward side, it cools, leading to cloud formation and subsequent rainfall over the coastal slope.
