Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The formation of rain-shadow deserts
Student answer (Band 8.0)
The diagram below illustrates how a type of desert, called a rain-shadow desert, is created.
Overall, the formation of a rain-shadow desert involves four main stages. Moist air first travels towards a mountain range, where it rises and cools, causing precipitation on the windward side. Subsequently, the air descends on the opposite side, becoming warmer and considerably drier, which eventually creates desert conditions.
Initially, moisture-laden air from the ocean is carried towards a mountain by prevailing winds. As the air reaches the mountain slope, it is forced upwards. Due to the decrease in temperature at higher altitudes, the moisture condenses and forms clouds. Consequently, substantial rainfall occurs on the windward side of the mountain.
After losing much of its moisture, the air crosses the mountain peak and begins to descend along the leeward side. As it moves downwards, its temperature increases and its relative humidity decreases. Therefore, very little precipitation occurs in this region.
Finally, the combination of warm, descending air and extremely low rainfall produces an arid area known as a rain-shadow desert. Thus, the mountain acts as a natural barrier, separating the wet windward side from the dry leeward side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response covers all key aspects of the diagram effectively. You present a clear overview in the second paragraph that outlines the main stages of the process, and you successfully report the progression from the ocean and coast, up the windward side of the mountain, across the peak, and down to the rain-shadow desert on the leeward side. The details are well-chosen and accurately reflect the sequence of events shown in the prompt. To reach the highest band, the response could integrate slightly more precise data from the diagram, such as mentioning the horizontal scale of thousands of kilometres or drawing explicit links between specific elevation changes and condensation rates.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your ideas are logically sequenced, providing a smooth progression from the initial moisture-laden winds to the final arid desert conditions. Paragraphing is used very effectively to group related steps of the process: introduction, overview, the windward ascent, the leeward descent, and the final conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Subsequently', 'Initially', 'As the air reaches', and 'Finally' are managed well and guide the reader seamlessly through the cycle without feeling mechanical or overused. Reference pronouns and substitution are handled accurately throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
You demonstrate a wide, flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic process description. Less common lexical items are used skilfully and naturally, such as 'moisture-laden', 'prevailing winds', 'condenses', 'precipitation', 'relative humidity', and 'arid area'. Word choice and collocations are precise, with only occasional minor slips. To achieve an even higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common idiomatic or technical collocations related to meteorology or topography.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response exhibits a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of flexibility. The majority of your sentences are completely error-free, demonstrating excellent control over subordinate clauses, participial phrases ('After losing much of its moisture'), and passive/active voice transitions. Punctuation and verb tenses are handled with precision. Only very occasional minor flaws occur, but they never impede communication or detract from the sophisticated flow of the scientific explanation.
