IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Every university bachelor programs should add a duration of time spent in academic progress in foreign country or doing a traineeship. I think that advantages of this above statement would outweight the disadvantages, the following paragraphs will justify my opinion.
On of the most advantage of placement is that students will get on-site experience because it is difficult to learn everything from the theory written in the books and various websites. Moreover, if it happens it will benefit the people by increasing their connection with the beings that they are meeting during the studying abroad or while having experience by going to the place physically, it will result in the improvement of their language as individuals will meet human beings from different parts of the world. For instance, majority of children get placed to a job right after their placement because of their experience during placement and reference from the co-workers. Hence, it is advantageous for undergraduate persons to get a period of time spent in an onsite exposure.
Despite these merits of placement, it also has cdemerits, like finances, although getting time for placement is good but some places do not pay for thta, they asked the students to work without any currency due to which they spent days on without going to work and did not get paid on the site too. In addition, most of the co-workers or old employees do not accept the trainees because they sees them as competition and has rude behaviour towards innocent children. For example, a lot of childcare centres do not appoint staff because every semester they are assigned students to do the work without any charges and saves their staff cost. Therefore, people gets exploited from the higher authority with no excahne of salary.
In conclusion, period of time included in the courses for studying abroad or placement has a lot benefits such as language improvement, having new friends, and got skills, whereas has some disadvantages as well like doing a whole shift without any wages and going through the harassment by the other employees or workers of that organisation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including practical experience, language development, unpaid placements, and possible exploitation. The childcare-centre example gives the disadvantages some concrete support. However, several benefits are asserted rather than fully explained: the point about making connections is unclear, and the claim that most students get jobs after placements is broad and unsupported. The discussion also focuses mainly on work placements, with little consideration of studying abroad as a distinct option. To strengthen the response, explain how each main point supports your comparison of advantages and disadvantages, and develop the less clear ideas with specific reasoning or examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “Despite these merits,” and “In conclusion” help show the direction of the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, and the long second sentence in the advantages paragraph combines several ideas—connections, meeting people, and language improvement—without clear relationships between them. References such as “if it happens” and “they” are also not always clear, which interrupts progression. The conclusion lists points but does not clearly weigh them against each other. Use more precise references and organise each body paragraph around one main idea, followed by explanation and an example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “on-site experience,” “traineeship,” “co-workers,” and “exploited,” and these choices help communicate the main subject. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “placement,” “students,” and “people,” while several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “academic progress in foreign country,” “connection with the beings,” and “no exchange of salary.” Spelling errors, including “outweight,” “cdemerits,” and “excahne,” also reduce accuracy. These issues sometimes make the reader work to infer your meaning. Build a more precise set of topic phrases and check spelling and collocations; for example, use “international study” and “unpaid work” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer, complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “although,” and “due to which.” This shows some range, but complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur across the response. Examples include “Every university bachelor programs,” “they sees them,” and “people gets exploited,” where agreement is incorrect; “a lot benefits” and “got skills” also show problems with articles and verb forms. Some sentences are difficult to follow because clauses are joined without clear grammatical control, particularly the sentence beginning “Despite these merits of placement.” Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent verb forms, then divide long sentences when needed. More reliable control of these patterns would make your meaning clearer.
