IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In undergraduate courses, university should include an opportunity to study in abroad for a certain time or provide some work opportunities to the students. I strongly agree with this statement because I think that if they are given these chances they can do better in their carrer.
There are some benefits of providing courses to the undergrade students that offer to study abroad for a period or do some relevent work related to their subject. Firstly, it will help to make them independent and self confident. In addition, they will be able to know that what is good or bad for their future and take decision according to that which will help them to succeed in life. Secondly, they will be able to solve any kind of practical problems and it will make their life more easier. Most importantly, their communication skills will be improved which is an essential skill for their further work life. For example, if an agricultural university of China include an intership that will occur in an agricultural country like Bangladesh, the students can learn more about different techniques about growing crops in adverse climatic condition like in extreme flood condition or during drought. Therefore, it will help to broaden their outlook and also enrich their knowledge.
On the other hand, there are some negative sides of this. It can become a problem, if students can not communicate properly with foreigners or maintain a balance with their work and study life. Moreover, it will be time consuming to mannage their academic study while working in a company. Therefore, it will also become expensive to send them in abroad and they might need time to adapt the culture.
In conclusion, opinions may vary, I think that unniversities should arrange some courses that include an intership in foreign country or provide some opportunities to work in a company which will make the students prepared for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you support including overseas study or work placements, and you address both benefits and drawbacks. The example of Chinese agricultural students learning about crop-growing in Bangladesh gives your argument relevant, specific support. You also explain benefits such as independence, practical problem-solving and communication skills. However, the disadvantages are less fully developed: communication difficulties, balancing work and study, expense and cultural adjustment are listed, but their effects are not explained or illustrated. Some benefits, such as making students “independent” and helping them “succeed in life,” would also be stronger with a clearer link to the proposed placements. This covers the task well overall, while fuller development of the less-supported points would make the response more complete and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages and a conclusion. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers recognise the stages of the argument. The agricultural example is placed appropriately within the benefits paragraph. At times, however, cohesion relies on a somewhat mechanical list of points, and several sentences begin with “it” or “they,” making the reference less precise. For example, “Therefore, it will also become expensive” does not clearly identify what “it” refers to. Varying transitions and making links between claims and explanations more explicit would improve the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “practical problems,” “communication skills,” “adverse climatic condition” and “adapt the culture.” There are also attempts at more specific language in the agricultural example. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “carrer,” “undergrade,” “relevent,” “intership,” “mannage” and “unniversities.” Some combinations are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “study in abroad,” “more easier” and “different techniques about growing crops.” These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a reliable range of collocations for education and employment, and proofread spelling and word forms so that your vocabulary supports the argument more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional and relative structures, as in “if they are given these chances” and “which is an essential skill.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “university should include” where a plural subject is needed, “an agricultural university … include” where subject–verb agreement is required, and “they will be able to know that what is good” with an incorrect clause structure. Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “in abroad” and “in an agricultural country.” The sentence beginning “Firstly” contains several linked ideas that would be clearer if divided or punctuated more carefully. More accurate control of these patterns, alongside your existing complex sentences, would strengthen the writing.
