IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, every university should include a period of time consumed in studying internationally or doing a practical work in industry during their bachelor (tertiary) degree programs. I completely agree that this would be advantageous because it would allow students to get hands on industry ready skills alongside broader perspective of thinking by meeting international students.
Firstly, it would be beneficial to add a specific semester that should be completed in a foreign university. This would allow students to meet researchers from different backgrounds with various skills and traditions. It would allow the students to get to know about others cultures and it would be beneficiary as students will be having a travel to different country for studies. It will keep them relaxed and energetic to kearn new things and explore the world.
In addition, students should be given an opportunity to work in industry to get trained for their professional life. It would allow them to explore how things work in real life. It will help them to do practical work instead of just theoretical knowledge.
For example, a computer science student will work under a senior software engineer which will help him/her to gain hands on experience on how a system is built by applying the theoretical knowledge that they gained from their course works.
In conclusion, i stronglu believe that it would be beneficial to organize a specific duration of time for international studies or practical work in industries as it is pivotal for students growth in long term.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you agree that overseas study or work placements would benefit undergraduates, and you address both options. The work-placement paragraph is the more developed one, especially the computer-science example showing how a student could apply course knowledge under a senior engineer. By contrast, the study-abroad paragraph relies on broad claims about meeting people, learning about other cultures, and feeling relaxed; it does not explain in much detail how these experiences improve students’ education or future prospects. The response also does not discuss any disadvantages, which is important when judging whether the advantages outweigh them. Develop this comparison explicitly and support each main point with a clear explanation or example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for overseas study and work experience, and a conclusion. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of the argument. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, the progression within the first body paragraph is less controlled: the points about meeting researchers, learning about cultures, and travelling are listed without showing clearly how one leads to the next or supports the central argument. Repeated “It would allow” and “It will” also make cohesion somewhat mechanical. Use clearer links between claims and their consequences, and make references such as “it” more specific where needed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “practical work,” “professional life,” “theoretical knowledge,” and “hands on experience.” These choices make the main ideas understandable, and phrases such as “broader perspective” show an attempt to express more abstract benefits. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “time consumed in studying,” “a practical work,” and “beneficiary” do not express the intended meanings naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “kearn” and “stronglu.” Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. More varied vocabulary for explaining outcomes—such as employability, professional networks, or cultural awareness—would help you develop the argument with greater precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a computer science student will work under a senior software engineer which will help him/her…” and a reason clause introduced by “because.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur often enough to limit accuracy. For example, “during their bachelor degree programs” needs a more complete possessive form, and “students will be having a travel” uses an unsuitable construction. In “others cultures,” the determiner and plural form do not agree, while “i stronglu believe” also shows a capitalization error. Practise accurate noun phrases, articles, agreement, and verb patterns, and proofread each sentence for basic form.
