IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays many universities offer study abroad semester as an option and allow students to skip a semester if they do an internship in their field. In my opinion, all universities should offer this chance for their undergraduate students and let the students decide which one to choose. However, studying abroad is not for everyone due to high costs involved and living alone in a different country can take a toll. Additionally, many students may not want to do a work placement or may not get a chance to do it due to being not qualified.
In today's world networking is everything, without proper connections landing a job or a position will be very difficult. If a student can do a semester abroad in a good university this will help them very much in forming new international friends and make new connections. Moreover, they can learn the culture of the host country and learn to live independently on their own. But the main issue for majority of students is finances, not all students can afford them and studying abroad is very expensive, so univeristies should offer some chances to students who can't afford so they can also experience studying abroad.
Generally, getting an internship while studying is very difficult for many students, only a few can achevie it. In my opinion universities should partner with companies and help students get internships in those companies. Also, like I said not everyone can get an work placemnet while they study but getting one will surely help in the careers like they might get converted into full time roles or use that experience to get another job.
In conclusion, studying abroad or doing an internship will vastly improve students chances of success in their life, although not everyone can do them but if anyone gets a chance they shoud definitely do it as the advantages will outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of mandatory study abroad or work placements. You clearly state your position that universities should offer these opportunities, though you acknowledge the financial and practical barriers. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that networking is important, you could further elaborate on how specific work placements translate into long-term career success. The conclusion is clear, but the argument could be strengthened by providing a more balanced view on whether these should be 'mandatory' for all, as the prompt suggests, rather than just 'offered' as an option. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is a progression of ideas, moving from the benefits of networking to the practical challenges of internships. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' to link your thoughts. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a more distinct focus. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'independent', 'networking', and 'internship' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'achevie' instead of 'achieve' and 'univeristies' instead of 'universities'. While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and some phrasing is slightly informal (e.g., 'take a toll', 'landing a job'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure consistent accuracy in spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'being not qualified' (should be 'not being qualified') and 'not all students can afford them' (where 'them' lacks a clear antecedent). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices that affect the flow. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but more variety in complex structures and greater attention to subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
