IELTS Writing Task 2 question

All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.

Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Internships and semester exchange programs are very crucial for the growth of students in any degree. I agree with this statement that the undergrad students should either spend a semester studying in any institution of their field abroad or doing a project based work in their field.

Having an exposure of an abroad institution will increase the exposure of the student along-with the knowledge of subject matter. Every school see a subject from a different perspective, so the students may experience new techniques and history of the subject. For example, a biology student going abroad for a semester may opt a different course in the field than the usual courses offered in his university. He can deliver that knowledge and experiences to his peers after coming back. In later years, the university professors should start teaching that subjects to the upcoming batches. As a result, this will benefit the students and the university as a whole.

On the other hand, workshops and internships also play an important role in the well being of a student in a field because theoretical experience is equally important as practical experience. From my perspective, it should be obligatory for every student to do a field related internship either that is biological sciences or engineering. For example, if in a classroom the teacher is telling about the genomes and DNA, he takes the exams and the students pass that. But will that be enough? They can't implement their knowledge until or unless they do the experimental work in a lab related to molecular genetics because knowledge of a science field without practical experience is like a bird without wings.

In conclusion, undergrad students who experience foreign exposure or do the internships are always more confident and excel more in comparison to those who don't. The benefits of these experiences are always far more than disadvantages. So, the Higher Education Commission should make sure to implement these in any university.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a definitive stance that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. You provided two distinct supporting arguments: the academic benefits of international exchange and the practical necessity of internships. While your ideas are relevant, they could be further developed with more specific, real-world examples rather than hypothetical ones (e.g., mentioning a specific type of industry or a well-known exchange program). The conclusion effectively summarizes your position, though it could be more nuanced to reflect the complexity of the topic. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'On the other hand' and 'As a result' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of biology and the general conclusion in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'semester exchange programs', 'theoretical experience', and 'molecular genetics'. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'very crucial' (crucial is already an absolute adjective) and 'doing a project based work' (should be 'undertaking project-based work'). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'in the field'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'Having an exposure of an abroad institution' (should be 'exposure to an institution abroad') and 'either that is biological sciences or engineering' (should be 'whether in biological sciences or engineering'). Additionally, there are some minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. Despite these errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the mistakes do not impede communication.
