IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, higher education has become a universal and common path taken by huge numbers of students around the world. For that reason universities across the world started partnering with each others and creating more and more various and complete courses. While some argue that all undergraduate courses shoud include exchange programs or work placements other believe that such should not always be the case.
As far as I am conserned, I truly belive that the benefits of providing these opportunities clearly outweigh the downsides.
First of all, it is undeniable that making all universities across the world provide their students with echange or work programs is just an utopian view that is difficultly achievable in our current state. For instance, that would represent millions of agreements across all the world's establishments. Leading to various and undesired economical issues. Moreover, making these programs mandatory would cause a loss in their actual worth. If everyone has already done a semester or more in a foreign college, same is with a work placement, then it is no more a special achievement that could be advantageous in someone's career.
However, considering only this point of view may overlook other important factors and lead to an incomplete understanding of the broader issue. As a matter of fact, both these periods of times either doing a work placement or studying abroad are life changing experiences. Indeed, this could be even more educating than the actual course. Practising and working is widely known to be more teaching than several hours spent reading and studying textbooks. Similarly, studying abroad could help develop skills that are greatly important. From discovering a new culture to interacting with other communities it is a very rich experience.
To conclude, even though at first glance including exchange programs or work placements in undergraduate university courses seemed to have a wide range of disatvantages the gained benefits proved to be far more advantageous.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. You acknowledge the practical difficulties of implementing such a policy while ultimately arguing that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide a logical argument regarding the logistical challenges, the section on benefits is slightly more general. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more specific and fully explored. For instance, instead of stating that studying abroad is 'rich,' you could briefly explain how it enhances employability or cross-cultural communication skills to strengthen your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all,' 'Moreover,' and 'To conclude' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph transitions naturally into the next will help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'utopian,' 'establishments,' and 'advantageous.' There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'echange' instead of 'exchange' and 'disatvantages' instead of 'disadvantages.' Additionally, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'difficultly achievable' (should be 'difficult to achieve') and 'more teaching' (should be 'more educational'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'partnering with each others' (should be 'each other'), 'other believe' (should be 'others believe'), and 'same is with a work placement' (which is awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional errors in sentence construction. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
