Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of mandatory study abroad or work placements. However, the position is not fully developed, and the conclusion is abrupt and fails to clearly restate the main argument. Crucially, the response is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which significantly impacts the depth of the arguments provided. While the ideas are relevant, they lack sufficient elaboration and specific examples to reach a higher band. The under-length nature of the essay means the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'To embark with' and 'On the other'. The progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed, and the lack of clear logical links between sentences makes the flow feel repetitive. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the final paragraph does not effectively summarise the essay's position, leading to a lack of overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of incorrect word choice and collocation, such as 'financial stable' instead of 'financial stability', 'expansive' instead of 'expensive', and 'homesikness'. The range of vocabulary is basic, and the student struggles to use more sophisticated terms to express complex ideas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequent errors in word formation and spelling hinder the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Examples include 'all university undergraduate courses ahold include', 'student can easy to manage', and 'do not any support their'. Subject-verb agreement and word order issues are common. While the reader can generally grasp the intended meaning, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The control over complex structures is weak.
