IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
All the educational institutions which provides undergraduate courses could include a period of time for students who can participate in a work placement or spend their time studying abroad. Although, this will prompt in additional tuition fee for students and reduce the academic course curriculum, this could help the students to have a vast amount of new opportunities with necessary career growth. Therefore, in my view the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
If Universities includes a period of time for students to participate for studying in a foreign country or to have a work placement, it would require the authorities to spend additional amount of funds to facilitate this initiative. They need to arrange multiple events and seminar for different consulting and recruitment agencies to offer students with proper opportunity. Therefore, this will increase the existing tuition fee of the undergraduate courses. For instance, many private university of our country nowadays demands additional fee during the time of university admission. They later use this funds to organize events, where students can reach out to their desired option.
However, a dedicated period of time provided for job placement or study abroad can open a huge amount opportunities for undergraduate students. The reason behind is that, they can prepare themselves for the highly competitive world and grow necessary experience which will eventually help them to build their future career. For example, during my final year exam i was able to land a internship in a multi national company as a software engineer during our university placement event. Thus, i was able gain necessary experience in my subject and was able to secure a permanent role.
In conclusion, even though there are some slight disadvantages of having dedicated period for work placement and foreign study, the advantages deemed as far more valuable regarding this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, such as the financial burden on universities and the career benefits for students. However, the development is somewhat limited; the argument regarding the 'reduction of the academic course curriculum' is mentioned in the introduction but not explored in the body paragraphs. Additionally, the example provided about a personal internship is relevant but could be more effectively linked to the broader argument about university-wide policies. Overall, the response is clear and maintains a consistent position throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the use of 'Therefore' appears twice in close proximity in the second paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, although some sentence structures are slightly awkward, which occasionally impacts the flow of ideas. Overall, the progression of the argument is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'facilitate', 'initiative', and 'multi-national company'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'prompt in additional tuition fee' (should be 'result in') and 'deemed as far more valuable' (should be 'are deemed'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement, such as 'institutions which provides' (should be 'provide') and 'Universities includes' (should be 'include'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'land a internship' (should be 'an internship') and 'during my final year exam i was able' (should be 'I was able'). While these errors are frequent, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response.
