IELTS Writing Task 2 question
All university undergraduate courses should include a period of time spent studying abroad or doing a work placement.
Do you think the advantages of this would outweigh the disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
There is a growing argument that all university students should spend part of their degree either studying abroad or gaining practical experience through a work placement. Although making this compulsory could create some difficulties, I believe the advantages would considerably outweigh the disadvantages because such experiences can enhance students’ employability, independence and understanding of the wider world.
The most significant benefit is that students can develop practical skills that cannot always be acquired in a conventional university classroom. A work placement, for example, allows undergraduates to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations, while also teaching them how to communicate with colleagues, manage deadlines and solve unexpected problems. These skills are highly valued by employers and can give graduates a substantial advantage when entering a competitive labour market. Similarly, studying abroad can expose students to different educational approaches and cultures, making them more adaptable and open-minded. For instance, an engineering student who completes a placement with an international company may gain experience of professional standards and technologies that are not available at their university.
Another major advantage is the personal development that comes from living or working in an unfamiliar environment. Students who spend several months abroad are likely to become more independent because they must manage accommodation, finances and everyday responsibilities without relying heavily on their families. They may also develop language and intercultural communication skills, which are increasingly important in an interconnected global economy. Even students who remain in their home country can benefit from a work placement because they are exposed to professional expectations and learn how to function effectively as part of a team.
Admittedly, compulsory overseas study or work placements could create financial and logistical problems. Travel, accommodation and living expenses may be unaffordable for some students, while others may have family responsibilities or disabilities that make relocation difficult. Universities would therefore need to provide financial assistance and offer flexible alternatives, such as paid local placements or remote international projects. However, these challenges can be addressed through appropriate institutional support and should not outweigh the long-term benefits.
In conclusion, although compulsory study-abroad programmes or work placements could impose financial and practical burdens on some students, their benefits are substantially greater. By combining academic knowledge with real-world experience, universities can produce graduates who are more skilled, independent, adaptable and prepared for the demands of modern employment.
